The Return By Victoria Hislop Book Review Books

Aims to open the eyes, and tug the heartstrings, of readers... Hislop deserves a medal for opening a breach into the holiday beach bag - Independent. A beautiful and sometimes tragic story of unrequited love and the power of the human spirit. It could have been shorter but it was still good. In The Return, Victoria Hislop takes readers to Granada, Spain, to a world deeply affected by war and filled with dance, bullfighting, and passion. Narrated by: Carolina De Robertis. I could tell that she definitely did her research about the Spanish Civil War, which is also an era of history I know too little about. Narrated by: Daniel K. Isaac. Sonia has a love for dance that she just can't explain. Still, I finished it quickly and it did inspire me to read more about the Spanish Civil war (at this stage I read the Wikipedia entry). I listened to this novel on audio and was transfixed, swept away by the imagery, passion and tragedy of the Ramirez family's plight during the Spanish Civil War. I did enjoy the read and I like the direction Hislop has taken this in and reading a book set in Greece is always a win for me. Narrated by: Helen Keeley. I really struggled with part one, I just couldn't get into it but once I got to part two I really enjoyed it. Sonia meets an old man in a cafe, and over coffee, they talk a bit about what Granada was like before the changes brought by war. Without quite knowing why, these two outsiders are drawn together.... A beautiful story. And the frame she used: letting someone from the present stumble across the story from the past doesn't work, because the mixture of present and past doesn't work well. Narrated by: Stephen Lang. The author of the beloved international bestseller The Island, Victoria Hislop now transports the reader to Granada, Spain, in a time of historic turmoil. Their sister, Mercedes, is a spirited girl whose sole passion is dancing, until she meets Javier and an obsessive love affair begins.

The Island By Victoria Hislop Review

This notable documentary undertow was a feature of Hislop's debut, The Island, a multigenerational narrative centred on a leper colony off Crete. The Return explains the tragedies of the Spanish Civil War experienced all over Spain through the Ramirez family, who live in Granada. Hislop describes the moves of the dance with a knowing eye, her evocation of its intense dark drama and the close partnership of dancer and guitarist cleverly foreshadowing the central love interest of the book. Despite the fact that the dictator Franco killed thousands of republicans and had tried to swept them out from his way, they were able to emerge again and won the election after his death. The Ramirez couple has four children: Antonio, a young teacher with a passion for left-wing politics; Ignacio, an arrogant matador with right-wing views and no problems betraying his own family; Emilio, a shy young man and skilled musician; and last their sister, Mercedes, whose sole passion is flamenco dancing.

A short story collection, One Cretan Evening, was published in September and both a third novel, The Thread is published in English in October and in Greek in November 2011. The first part of this novel certainly does not prepare you for the later intensity as suddenly the story takes on a complete change of tone and direction when we are transported back to the Granada of the nineteen thirties.
