Did I miss the family read aloud books? Graduated ds '08 & dd '09. IMO too heavy when there is so much else we have to cover too. Also K & 1st are all-inclusive, no need to buy a separate math or LA curriculum. Each day there is a check list (love that I don't have to worry about forgetting something). I have always used the book basket as a jumping off point for my library search, so I would get several books that aren't on the list too, but in 9th grade all the reading suggested was half a dozen chapter books for the entire year, most of which my children had already read.
The main reason we started homeschooling was that my oldest child was very advanced in reading, reading fluently at 3 and reading chapter books at 4 years old. I don't have experience for higher grade levels... but I have really enjoyed the Kindergarten curriculum and plan on getting the 1st grade curriculum for next year. My kids are 4th and 2nd, so we do most everything together. When we home schooled we used Sonlight - I like the lit biased approach - I will say that I did not like some of the books - they were dated and some were just not historically accurate - so I found a good substitution, or used them and had a lesson on why they were off. So far, I've just pulled from here and there for our curriculum and haven't really found anything yet that I'm really excited about! From a homeschool parent that has used both: Our first year we used Abeka and it was like pulling teeth for my 6yo son to sit and do worksheets. MFW definitely isn't easier. The Lord is relevant in history, science, ex... and I want books that show how Christ is woven into everything and He is the center of our days. I don't remember that in FIAR. We also did ADV with a third grader and no regrets.
