If it weren't for the people panting and whining as they scrambled up the craggy slope, you would never know this was a well traveled trail. No way could I do this. This section of trail provides great viewpoints of the surrounding cliffs/valleys and also has a few campsites that are more secluded than those located closer to Indian Staircase. Then you follow the trail around to the northwest. There are more areas we did not have time to explore on this hike, including the area on top and to the east of the staircase, as well as some interesting sounding features a friend told me about that are beyond the point we turned back near the Council Chamber rock shelter. I have been very lazy in posting anything about my adventures in the Red River Gorge. The first scramble, I made it up with ease. The easiest one is quite large, and is the second one you will come to. There are better views in the Gorge and no view is worth your life. Leaving Cloud Splitter, I carefully retrace my steps off the mountain and head back to the Sheltowee Trace Trail. Be sure to stay a safe distance from cliff edges. We stayed here for a while, taking in the gorgeous views, before traveling back out to the mouth of the cave and making our way up the final section of rock that leads to the top of Cloud Splitter. The span of Adena Arch arises directly from the top of this ridge like a giant kids slide and rounds back down over a cave in the center of it. They realized that their kids had a lot in common and that they should meet. My interests range from backpacking, to homesteading, beekeeping, gardening, canoeing and to many other outdoor activities.
