I turned around in a "crab crawl" position and sheepishly made my way back to the base of the trail. Parking is very limited within Red River Gorge so it is recommended to arrive as early as possible to ensure that space is available. Portions of this hike are on unmarked, unmaintained trail. Ideally, we'd have hiked to the bottom of the staircase and ventured up, as crawling down proved to be much more of a challenge than climbing up. Beginning in Tennessees Pickett State Park, the trail travels north through the Big South Fork into Kentucky and spans the entire height of the Daniel Boone National Forest, ending in the town of Morehead.
