The character played by Claudia Cardinale in Once Upon a Time in the West seems a decent female character to me. His shady past with Frank is delivered in such perfect increments, tiny pieces of dialogue and flashbacks that don't come into focus into the third act. But Leone refrains from any extreme form of violent political activity seen in many Italian Westerns of the 1960's. Other more minor, yet noteworthy actions Frank commits during the movie are. Henry Fonda originally turned down a role in the picture. My comments refer to that Restored, International version. One such moment was the very last image of the film, when the main title theme was repeated, with soprano harmony, as Noodles inhales the smoke of an opium pipe, lies on his back and, finally, smiles. But this one was bankrolled by Paramount and looks like it: There's a wealth of detail, a lot of extras, elaborate sets. The trading post is part stable, part saloon, part storehouse. It proves a chilling moment when we learn why Harmonica has come back and why he wants to kill Frank.
Fonda was Leone's favorite actor, so he couldn't pass up the chance to work with the performer. I almost don't want to watch another Western because I'm sure all the rest will pale in comparison. The scene becomes even more ominous, when there is stand off between Cheyenne and Bronson's Harmonica. It is a visceral depiction of toxic masculinity which still reigns supreme in today's world, showing inherently broken children rising to power through violence and corruption. This is one, amazing piece of film-making! In the Good, The Bad and The Ugly, we have the Ramirez brothers, Tuco and Pablo who are on the opposite sides of the moral divide; one is a priest, the other is a Bandit. To make good movies, you need a lot of time, a lot of money, and a lot of goodwill. I am not fascinated, as you say, by the myth of the West, or by the myth of the gangster.
