Elisa and Tasmin may not want to put too much stock into the folklore of Salix Pointe, but there is a reason that the universe has brought the two women together. I felt like she really understands what I was trying to do, and she's a Black woman and I was really happy to put it in her hands. Ayana has a story to tell, and I am eager to hear it. The second book is written from multiple POV's and Binti's POV was pleasantly surprising. The first chapter of Beasts of Prey is from the perspective of a character named Adiah, and I loved writing her passages. Koffi and Ekon form a tentative alliance and together enter the Greater Jungle, a world steeped in wild, frightening magic and untold dangers.
I buddy read this with Leah over at Leah's books, and once again we had exactly the same opinion… we both loved it! As she plans her escape she begins to realize she is a much stronger daraja than she could have ever imagined. I love how Grey writes so purposefully; she came in with a real life set of problems to write about and she does very tastefully. The enemies to lovers trope gains a realness and depth with their associated characters; their relationship is not insta-love or a situation where they get together because there are no other available characters in the story. I am disappointed to say this book had maybe 2-3 interesting chapters in the middle before going back to being boring. I'm contracted to write Books 2 and 3 in the Beasts of Prey trilogy, so I'll be busy for the next few years! Koffi is exposed to details about darajas that she had never known, having been raised without any knowledge of the magic she carries. "In 2015 I was 22 years old. Will you be picking up Beasts of Prey? But the longer they're apart, the more they will have to reckon with changing destinies and, maybe, changing hearts. I did really enjoy learning more about Ekon, Koffi and their families. Final verdict: With intricate world-building and a fast-paced plot, BEASTS OF RUIN is a thrilling and thought-provoking sequel in a consuming YA fantasy series. For generations a fragile balance has held. It just wasn't developed enough for me.
Grief-stricken, Karina decides to resurrect her mother through ancient magic. The repetition issues I had with book 1 are no longer here and I found the characters had growth and the stakes were higher as we explore more of the magic system and world (which is what I wanted from book 1). Mama pointed Koffi toward the aviary while she raced toward a pen of panicked kudus. She must learn to use the splendor within her. There's a lesson in that. The ending outshone the entire book! I had nothing but good things to say about it and was so excited to read the sequel.
The only issue is that the pronunciation of some of the Nigerian terms were not correct in a dialect point of view but all together awesome! I love how nothing felt rushed, and you can really see the author putting her heart and soul into these two becoming confident, powerful, and who they are truly meant to be. Ekon's journey equally as interesting, as he travels South to find Koffi. After having promised to use her new powers to serve Fedu, the cunning god of death, and assist in his plans to remake the world, Koffi finds herself a prisoner in Thornkeep—a luxurious mansion with well-manicured gardens. As she reluctantly learns to survive amidst unexpected friends and foes, she will also have to choose between the life—and love—she once had, or the one she could have, if she truly embraces her dangerous gifts. The reader learns more of the daraja history as a whole as well as the heartbreaking circumstances that landed Koffi and the zoo as an indentured servant in the first place. The last 100 pages got interesting and exciting so now I need to read what comes next. The first time the Nightmares came, it nearly cost Alice her life. As an indentured servant to the Night Zoo, Koffi tends to and trains strange and dangerous creatures with her mother. You will see Koffi in all her 'splendor' 😉finding her place among the darajas, which was an incredibly interesting magic system and I loved how the different orders and power manifestations were described.

I liked how we got to dive more deeply into this world and the intricacies of its magic. No sooner had she stood than Mama grabbed her arm and broke into a sprint. This little gang turns out to be a jughty force and end up dropping Ekon at the mists door. Mama called from below. Mama was still several feet down, frantically climbing the vines and looking over her shoulder with a panicked expression. Ayana told this story in 3 POVs and 2 timelines, and I was surprised to find that I never felt like any POV was lacking. This book did not fall in the second book syndrome slump AT ALL. The Empire is faltering beneath the burden of political infighting and a deadly plague.
I expend an inordinate amount of energy masking during the day, in particular trying not to obsess over unbalanced numbers and reminding myself not to tic (I often flex muscles or touch things repeatedly until both sides of my body feel even). And I was confused because there was no closure in this book, I thought this was a duology but clearly with that ending it can't be! There's no such thing as magic in the broken city of Lkossa, especially for sixteen-year-old Koffi, who indentured to the notorious Night Zoo, knows the fearsome creatures in her care and paying off her family's debts to secure their eventual freedom can be her only focus. It is common for a series to not have every installment be a 5 star read, and I often find that falls on book two for some reason. V. E. Ekon is well on his way to becoming a Son of the Six, elite warriors who protect the city from danger, but his last task ends in disgrace. It was my first chapter book, and I remember feeling so proud after I'd finished it! Start to finish I was hooked and need book three right now The world building is so beautiful and immersive.

The moment the cover made sense and the title was mentioned was thrilling, I loved it. I hope this doesn't dissuade readers with OCD or OCD-like tendencies from reading this book, but be aware of your boundaries going in. I think this would have been beautiful as a duology and this felt like mostly wasted pages. They even have a name for their kind: Shardless. I'm excited to share this story with the world, and especially with readers who haven't seen themselves centered in magical stories nearly enough. I'm excited to see what comes in the next (probably final) installment of the series.
