My personal favorite character of this drama. So, idiot me, watched this entire dumb show. I know the writers wanted to keep the mystery and all but the revelations were very sloppy. The impact was then lost when the details were finally revealed. "The Bride of the Water God" had an excellent base story, but then they decided to turn a melodrama with a not-so-lucky ending into a romantic comedy, it just went wrong. My verdict: I dropped.
Because I kept expecting something to happen… which is ridiculous, because after a certain point, you just know nothing is going to happen because if the writers knew how to make a good story, they would have been giving you one the entire time. Gong Myung as Bi Ryeom the Wind God on the other hand, felt more like a passing supporting role in the beginning, who is a playful god and up to a lot of mischief. Bride of the Water God paints an attractive portrait intending to combine mythology and romance, but it falls short in synchronizing the fabricated elements and the lead characters' love line. It may or may not be the actual reality. A CEO of a resort, Hoo Ye also happens to fall in love with So Ah and therefore becomes Habaek's main rival.
It has a new way of direction and plot writing which many people are unable to digest as they are used to watch bullshit. Let me vent and start with where this drama went wrong. They way they tried to show how he was before and what he would become later with the big humanity lesson but it was super sloppy.
This whole drama was just pretty people declaring themselves as deities and acting like snobby little bastards and squabbling like high school kids. Comparison with the Manga: Basically, the TV Series was a spin-off from the manga and not the actual the actual storyline. I always decide to watch a drama based on it's poster. Also a special mention for Im Joo Hwan who is always such a consistent performer.
He's adorable, sure. The scene of Jung Dong Hwan talking about business with nephew was equally terrible. Gone are the days of gods being old men in robes. "In vain have I struggled. Those who demand unnecessary twists, a begginning and a ending. He wasn't the second lead, he wasn't the villain (*tharki whisper* though he was real cute) his presence accomplished nothing. CAST: They were all pretty good looking, and they all had valuable parts. I think that the show's biggest draw led into some of its biggest missteps. Spoiler-free Thoughts. The ending felt somewhat tacked on instead of carefully assembled through the second half to the show. Habaek comes to Earth to find a magical stone that will grant him the power he wants.
So-ah is a psychiatrist who has no peace in her life. He is still one of my favourite princes from "Scarlet Heart" but his chemistry with Seo Hyun and Lee Sung Kyung was definitely much better. He sadly prepares for his return to the gods' kingdom. The chemistry between the two was hit and miss. Story: The initial plot was simple, a God who comes to earth with a goal and ends up falling in love with a human and that love is forbidden. I didn't feel connected with her character because I think So Ah is very irritable and unwilling to help her patients. In the mortal world, money means power and those with power, authority and status are more powerful than the King. There is just so much pretty here. But I still had a big smile on my face! I haven't seen Krystal act before but she was the perfect fit for Moo Ra.
They dropped things here and there that initially made a splash, and then they let them sink to the bottom, forgotten. Will i recommend it to anyone?... It gets old really soon. Nam Joo Hyuk was an amazing actor, but it seemed like his version of Habaek was a bit 2-dimensional, in my opinion. It almost brought some tears to my eyes. Finally, the biggest problem of this drama. During the first 20 minutes of the second episode, the kiss scene was repeated at least 4 or 5 times. But if you put it when there are like 45 minutes left, even fan service moments won't salvage the story anymore. There were so few times when I felt them link. It came from a successful manga with guaranteed readers whom should be waiting for the adaptation.
Ha Baek may be the King in the Water World but he is still a noob in the mortal world. Perhaps what they could have done was to strengthen the storyline and add on to some intensity with some CGI and fighting scenes, to make up for the lack of emotional engagement. The half-god sub-plot was so useless it drove me nuts. It turns out that on the night when So Ah attempted to kill herself, his father as a god's servant was granted a wish, leading him to witness his daughter's suicide attempt.
He also loses his powers completely. I loved everything about his character, and he goes on quite a difficult journey. I saw many people rooting for Hu Ye instead, but his stiff demeanor didn't appeal to me. The secondary characters playing deity roles were weakly sketched so that you could lift them out of the story, and it would still be a working narrative. I really liked Nam Joo Hyuk and Shin Se Kyung both as individual characters so getting to know them was fun. He has to go through endless suffering or reincarnations and deaths forever but he tried to do good for the society after he was being adopted by a rich chaebol. He's really there for her, genuinely cares about her troubles and does what he can to help. He's a walking wardrobe by himself, definitely a lived-up-to-his-name model but as an actor, he still has a long way to go. I enjoyed the heroine because of the relatable nature of her character.
