So frankly, I don't really have much time outside of those. So I'm going to ask you just a few quick fire questions to end, if that's okay. Suspend, featuring saoirse dream. I find mfs like you really interesting guy. Why do you like doing what you do? So what it means is that we can absolutely have conviction, but I think that we have to hold that conviction fairly loosely and be open to challenge and debate and robust evidence providing better approaches or better ways for us to do that. I find little elements of kindness in every day, because I think that sometimes change happens in small doses rather in large ones.
Let's bring some outside experts and some people taking maybe even different approaches to the platform and talk to them and understand the process that they're going through. Is that much harder than just using a backward-looking screened approach? Again, in that more leadership capacity, is there anything there that you can share in terms of how it works for the specialist teams? Because again, they're not separate, they're together. So given that ESG is this nascent field and often best practice hasn't emerged, it can be tempting to apply a model from maybe another asset class or maybe even another manager. And I carried that through in terms of our communication, our reporting, as well as some of the tools and tactics that we've used in the kind of corporate sphere as well. I mean, these are really big open-ended topics, and if you're only going to come at it from a systems view, you end up basically amalgamating the views of lots of other researchers and coming up with some sort of consensus view. It's, to your point earlier, Vish, it is mainstream, but that doesn't equate action. We brought it to our board, it's really good to hear the voice of your major investors that this is, you know, we've had it on the agenda. Realizing that was not my calling, finished doing an MBA in the US. I find mfs like you really interesting people. It's like the industrial revolution in terms of the amount of lending that is going to be required to fund the investments, that are required in new technologies and an evolution towards a more sustainable path. And when you're done with your work, you could sit in this bright red, incredible in my mind, bathtub and read. That is actually the beauty of portfolio construction is to require a minimum level of threshold to be able to make those decisions that you have to make on a more agile fashion, but understand that you have to have the nuanced approach and the flexibility. What do you think we missed, and what should we maybe focus on for next season? Have grit and have passion. And yeah, what is it that they are doing differently that does make them the better company in the space? I think that it has been great to see that evolution working with management teams or issuers, sovereign issuers, municipal issuers. A bit like we mentioned before, thinking deeply can take a long time. Ross Cartwright: Dave, in your own words, what is pricing power? I think Michael Mauboussin, also. I find mfs like you really interesting things. I think I must have said this in multiple episodes that I think best practice in the whole field of sustainable investing is yet to fully emerge. That part, certainly the governance part was always pretty much present in fixed income as a whole. And on the flip side, I wonder, especially given you're looking for those companies that are solving environmental issues and problems, and they can be, I'm sure you know, fascinating and sort of groundbreaking in many respects, and businesses going through transformation.
The first sort of theme that comes to mind for me thinking about it now is the idea of 'embracing complexity', which was sort of spearheaded by Barnaby in our first conversation: Barnaby Wiener: Embrace complexity. For example, the internet has changed the competitive landscape for many consumer retailer groups and also consumer product groups. For next season, in the absence of feedback from our listeners -- So again, please email us if you would like to hear something different -- but maybe getting some more outside experts and people from outside of MFS talking about the different approaches that they're taking, going deeper on some of the sector-based pathways on the complexity therein of applying this in real time. So, from that perspective, in terms of brands and that, how do you think about pricing power on those businesses? It has a really strong distribution, and has invested a lot, has paid a lot of attention to their innovation engine.
And as we talked about earlier, valuation is an important component of the overall strategy. It's for the sake of delivering better business outcomes. I mean, I've often thought about this and ended up chasing Mytel. That's how you enjoy your dining experiences, having a combination of those, of sweet and salt, and hors d'oeuvres and stews. But certainly now, we see it all the time with companies, those that are investing ahead for the climate transition, which we are all a part of, and those that are, you know, simply not and continue to do business as usual with massive emissions and other things we'll get into. So, I think other than that, I think that would be what I'd be really excited to listen to.
I felt that there was a lot more variety in terms of the different asset classes, obviously the different currencies, the global nature of fixed income, that appealed to me, which is an area again, it's not typical that you would learn a lot about fixed income in general in university or indeed, through other daily events in your life. And, you know, when I think about what matters from a business perspective, for most companies, people are the most important asset. Where are you on that journey to disclose your emissions? I read a lot of obviously investment content every day, so I don't always just look to read books about investments. In today's episode, we are going to take a slightly different approach. Our MFS Climate Working Group is made up of a real cross section of equity specialists and generalists across the globe, fixed income specialists and generalists and you know, we're really coming at this, our ESG specialists at the firm, our stewardship, leader and we're really coming at this trying to look at this from many different angles and really back to the materiality of climate for our different investments at the firm. It's everywhere in daily discourse, as well as our investment conversations, as well as our conversations with our clients. And then the power of the collective to help overcome the nuance complexity, contextual analysis that you need to do as well as help keep some of our biases in check. And then we have, of course, the generalists who are looking at, you know, I've seen companies like this before. You're right, we haven't spent much time on it today. Ever since then, we've been engaging very closely with them around some of those issues.
You have to assemble the team in a completely different way. It's a journey, and I think we're getting better and better at asking those questions. You and I read a lot of books in this space, and we've definitely been influenced by people who take a very systems approach and who would advocate that actually more systems, top-down systems thinking needs to occur in the finance system in order to really understand sustainability and some of the forces at play. And we could have a whole separate conversation on those. I did a little bit of both and then eventually settled in capital markets, where I fell in love with fixed income, actually. Ross Cartwright: Dave has really been fascinating. So back to your point on data earlier, which is so important. Vish Hindocha: Nicole, I really want to ask you about climate. So there is some good data, there could certainly be a lot more of it. In fact, for some of the highly coveted brands, the scarcity value, or at least a perception of scarcity can mean that higher pricing coupled with a perception of increased value for the product can actually lead to higher demand over time, even when pricing is increasing quite significantly.
