The year of working from home and never ending loungewear made me decide to buy a coverstitch machine. I feel like when I sit down to use it, I know exactly what's going to happen and how to control it. I had the pleasure of trying the Bernina 750 QE a few months ago while at a workshop taught by Jacquie Gering and hosted by the Aurora Sewing Center. Update 2: December 2014: This Bernina post was one of my first posts about this sewing machine. I also plan on getting a long arm quilting machine when I'm ready for one (too busy and still travelling too much to consider one at the moment) so I planned on spending many creative enjoyable hours on my new Bernina in the meantime. Bernina is still my dream, and I'm sure there's one out there that's right for me. The larger harp is also what enables the 750QE to embroider a wider design in one hooping, since the entire width of the embroidery hoop is to the right of the needle when the machine is stitching the left edge of the emrboidery design. The feed system might make you uneasy when using it the first time on layers of fabric as a handful of other 750 QR owners complains of the machine feed eating the fabric. Recommended particularly for appliqu or any project requiring pivoting and getting bulky projects under the presser foot easily. Beware if you buy a 750QE. It keeps your straight or zigzag stitch uniformed even when you change pace or direction. What I do know is that the Bernina 820 is my most expensive quilting regret and if I had my time again, I would not purchase it.
I have had multiple issues with it. It seems like the very first hook in the back. This statement alone has told me a lot. Unfortunately though, for the best embroidery experience, they recommend that you use an embroidery module that can be easily attached, just like the slide-on table. I'm not sure what to do. Adjusting the tension to accommodate any thread except regular sewing thread is a nightmare, I get messages saying the thread is broken when it's not. 5k + machine lasted a year and now it WILL NOT reboot. Yes, I'm disappointed. Open embroidery foot # 20C. When the thread does break it pops back into the machine and can't be pulled out the correct way. As a Bernina owner I can utilize all of my feet with this machine so it is a consideration if you already own a Bernina as you've put in the investment with feet you might have already bought; however it is also annoying because I already own almost all of the 8 feet offered with this model! As far as I can tell, the only things I'd lose would be some decorative stitches (the 750QE has 250 decorative stitches to choose from, whereas my current Artista machine has 396 decorative stitches), the sideways-motion stitches (another really cool feature on my current machine that I never, ever use), and the ability to edit embroidery designs at the point of stitch-out, right on the screen on the sewing machine. I'll pass on the deed to that platinum mine, too -- let someone else deal with the labor strikes in South Africa this year.
