The battle scenes are realistic and reader grabbing, and the characters just get more and more developed as the novels go along. When I sat down to read Dawnthief, I didn't know what I was getting myself into. Analysis: Dawnthief, being the first of a series, set the bar really high for James Barclay. Hirad the barbarian is established as the heart of the group and is a humorous character who's easy to root for.
I did like some aspects of the worldbuilding, however. The characterization is rich and detailed. Okay, he didn't put trademarks, and it's been a few years since I've read it, but still, the capitalization thing makes me remember it that way. All grey characters whom you didn't know what side they were on until they end, some good surprise reveals and misdirections, and some well-developed toxic relationships that are unfortunately all too tangible. For some reason my brain refuses to categorise Denser as anything else than a rat man of the sort that goes on to become a 'tumblr sexyman' so every time Barclay mentioned him being attractive or had him and Erienne falling for each other it felt very strange. I think this is mostly down to the characters as while they have a tendency towards being self-important edgelords Barclay has managed to give just about everyone a couple aspects you can get attached to. The novel is chockful of action, drama, romance, and suspense which makes this book a page turner.
The action: is incredible! Standing on the buffalo's back. ELITE, UNSTOPPABLE... AND HIRED TO DO THE UNTHINKABLE. And it's good to see the female characters getting a bit more page-time too. The code that somehow sets these guys apart from the rest of the world? In this inter-generational saga of the illustrious Braganza family — the finest tuners and dealers of pianos in the India of yore — characters come and go, flitting in and out of the lives of the Braganzas. The whole crisis around them getting too old for mercenary work seemed contrived because if they'd just recruited some younger members they could pass on their knowledge and also continue to fight longer? Re-reading them has been a fascinating and enjoyable experience. Together for many years.
Barclay's novel contains all of the right elements for fans of less-than-high fantasy. I did really like seeing Puck return to his darker nature and the way the insidious thoughts kept breaking through, this was the part of the story that interested me most and I also liked the flashbacks that gave you a bit more history into Puck's story.
