What we loved was MFW gives you several book options for each subject in their "Book Basket" lists so there is no need to buy the books when I can borrow them for free, and you can read any or all that are available at your library. You read the read alouds. PRETTY PRETTY BOOKS! My Father's World is most commonly paired with Sonlight curriculum. In addition to a lot of reading, there's worksheets, and hands on stuff as well. Some of the books have become ultimate favorites that I now read to all of my children as they get older such as My Father's Dragon, but I wasn't a huge fan of quite a few of them. It was perfect for Robert and his learning style. To make Sonlight cheaper you really do have to work at it, we used all my homeschooling on a budget tips to do it. It also means I do not like strict rules and inflexible structure, so I need freedom to be flexible. I personally like to add or change things as it fits my family, but I value that I can just open it up and start in when it is a busy time in our lives. I look at some of those SL books from the early cores, and I wonder why I felt the need to read those books to my little kids! But we basically did just the history, read-alouds and some readers. My Father's World is not. For example, in K you study the sun (science) and also memorize that "Jesus is the light of the world".
Heart I'm going to spend some more time at their site... Mama Calidad. I briefly mentioned the cost earlier but this is a huge difference, as well. This was game changer in my process, and has kept me from wasting hours looking for used curriculum. We love Apologia science, so this was a great fit for us all around. I can choose to purchase them or borrow from the library as I see fit. I can complete a "core" within a year. Easy to double up days if I get behind. My 8th grader still loves those read-aloud times. I have heard many moms say they started with an Open and Go curriclum like MFW, but as they grew more confident, they made up their own curriclum. Too many of the books were introducing topics that I wanted to wait until 3rd or 4th grade for. I remember a lot of language arts vocab with the books. Hands-on activities are fun and interesting. MFW 1st, Adventures, ECC, CTG, RTR, Exp-1850. As I said before, I originally wanted Sonlight.
