I blame the editor, who needed to do a better job of making sure the book flowed from point to point, not stopped and started willy nilly. I wouldn't necessarily say that this book wasn't worth reading, it just seemed like Ackerman focused on so many painstakingly small details throughout the book, and then suddenly ran out of paper or something. There are other factual WW II things that are in error as well that others have mentioned in their reviews, so I won't belabor the issue, besides I think that this book is less about the context of WW II and more about Ackerman's self-indulgent poetic license. During one of these excursions, Jan sees a young teenage Jewish girl with beautiful hair raped by two German soldiers. This group doesn't sabotage Germans but works only to rescue Jews. Ackerman's research is comprehensive and immersive and her book should not be compared to a reader's preconceived expectations—or worse—the movie version. THE ZOOKEEPER'S WIFE is yet another unknown story, a true tale of survival of the human spirit pitted against what seemed to be the end of the world in Poland. I saw this movie and thought it was well done. Antonina, the polish Zookeper's Wife, had a way with animals, that also allowed her to use her psychology to connect with even those human species that seemed without a human soul. Having said that, the story was disjointed and she went on ad nauseum on tangents with descriptions about beetles, buffalo and cows and forgot the real reason for telling this story.

I really liked this film, but I definitely want to read the book more so now. I would recommend the book for 13+, the movie does the book no justice and there are many unnecessary scenes there that never took place in the book. These include a young girl (Shira Haas) who is presumably raped and shown bruised and bleeding, a woman (Efrat Dor) separated from her imprisoned husband (Iddo Goldberg) and a couple of escaped Jews who are found and shot (on screen). The book paints a brief picture of what their life was like prior to the 1939 German invasion. It's not well-written and it drags on with endless pages of absolutely useless descriptions of things that have no place in the story. It was a true story, and the book is populated with the writings and thoughts of many interviewed since, which makes the story of survival and resilience all the more incredible. I've owned this book for more than 5 years!!! ► We see a ghetto where people are crowded into an area and stand in line for food; soldiers yell orders at them and two soldiers speak to a young teen girl, caress her hair and take her into a building and rape her; when we see the girl later her clothing is torn, she has bloody scratches, blood streams down her legs and she appears to be in shock. It's an important, and sobering, lesson to re-learn. Why is the Zabinski's decision to start a pig farm fed on garbage from the Jewish Ghetto such a clever way to hide their rescue efforts from the German soldiers? The ghetto is evacuated. Years of war and curfews didn't alter that; he still anxiously awaited his father's return. A number of prominent Polish Jews pass through their home, too. If they want a real picture of WW II and what that was like for the people in Europe, there are far better stories that portray this time far more accurately.
