If it was a mystery, well, the most obvious clues were given away too soon, while the others were filtered through a messy, garbled stream of information, all this coming together into a clumsy infodumped! When Viscardi arrives, Morella begs him to kill her and spare the remaining Thaumas girls. We're told there are different peoples, different gods and goddesses, and lots of different lands but it's given on such a surface level it's hard to believe this world actually exists, or could even function. It takes what was already a ghoulish tale and twists it further with much success.
The mystery was kind of underwhelming, but it wasn't terrible. Fisher, a childhood crush, was as kind and considerate to Annaleigh as YA fiction can make him while Cassius—the seductive and enticing foreign islander—swept Annaleigh away and helped her solve the curse. The horror aspect was strong and nauseating, perfectly encompassing the overall environment and tone. Annaleigh is shocked but overjoyed, and the pair share a kiss. The book had about 403 pages in total and I missed a really crucial part of the plot and was thrown right into the finale. However, things are less than ideal as her sisters keep dying in freak accidents. Cassius is the light in Annaleigh's very dark and depressing world. After a thorough search, Annaleigh and Cassius find them dead in a forest near their house. But will Ananleigh find out why she keeps on losing her sisters before it's too late? But in the morning THEIR DANCE SHOES are found to be WORN THROUGH as they had been DANCING ALL NIGHT! At breakfast the next day, the sisters confront their father about the family curse, and he dismisses the rumors angrily. If my copy wouldn't have missed 33 pages of the finale it probably would have been even better. As a result, this story was more complicated than it needed to be. So this love story was a medicine for the pain this book gave me. But then the issues start. And if if was meant to be all of that at once, well, hats off, it failed.
