He introduced all the acts, but I don't think they used it. JR: I don't think so. They toured for eighteen months with the band, but then chose to return to their acoustic roots for their latest album. It'll be out at some point this year, there's not much I can say about it but we'll be having a new record out. My one and only visit to the Newport Folk Festival was back in 2013, and among the highlights was an amazing afternoon set by Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale. KP: You're having the first with us.

"After a while, if you do your own thing long enough, maybe you become a reference point for how people can understand new music coming along after you. From the perspective of this song, perhaps it suggests that it might not be worth the time to think about it. That's what the Milk Carton Kids, Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale, have done with their new album, All The Things That I Did and All The Things That I Didn't Do. JR: It's not always a rescue mission. We used to have a team here, the Grizzles. Did they move far off or do you picture them above? Joey Ryan recalls the first time he sang with bandmate Kenneth Pattengale as a "lightbulb moment. " Eventually, he had the idea of adding in a long guitar solo "that would really throw people off their feet. The first one sounds like we're all discovering something together, " Pattengale muses.
Kenneth said, "We don't have it. KP: Also, sometimes you're down on the ground, and I like to walk over and kick you a few times. I don't think it would be fair to say either of us were on the precipice of quitting but the visions of success were delusional, for sure. Growing up, it didn't occur to me that Neil Young was Canadian, even as I was a huge fan of his as a teenager. Her crowds, the vast majority of them, were super attentive and appreciative. Ryan and Pattengale also recently hosted the 18th annual Americana Honors & Awards for the second year in a row, while the group has been nominated for three Grammy Awards: Best Folk Album in 2013 (The Ash & Clay); Best American Roots Performance in 2015 ("The City of Our Lady"); and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, in 2018 (All the Things That I Did and All the Things That I Didn't Do). Of course, on the other hand, would it kill them to do a least a small tour?

JR: The only three shows that sucked were the Vancouver shows, unfortunately. It feels like there's a new exciting world around every turn. I was probably in a little bit of denial about whether the songs were good enough. Playing the Media Club in Vancouver as they toured in support of their 2011 albums, Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan sat down with PopMatters for a lively conversation. We remembered ["One More for the Road"] and threw it on the pile, " Pattengale explains.
"Everybody form an arch! You have to remind yourself that you're not writing for your audience when there is one. While they play new material for one-third of their live shows, another third is older material, and four or five other numbers are played simply by Ryan and Pattengale. Alright guys … I wish you were here too, but you're still young with lots of creative juice, and I expect you'll be around for far longer than I will. I wanted to share the 2014 NPR-produced show, "Live at Lincoln Theatre. " On the song "Snake Eyes". Most of the people there were our friends and family, though we had each built up a modest local following over the previous years as solo artists. The duo will help announce the nominations for the Americana Honors and Awards on May 15th. I've never seen or heard a second of the Smothers Brothers, so I don't actually know what anyone is talking about. Host Robert Earl Keen, equipped with his 19 albums and 30 years in the music industry, knows a thing or two about Americana. There are heightened stakes, like, "We've got to do really well to win people over who don't necessarily already love us. By the way, I think he was entirely cut out of the film. How many strings do you break in a typical year? "Sometimes we'll switch parts for a beat or a bar or a note, " Ryan says. Your last album, The Only Ones, came out in 2019.
I'm not that kind of player, and I'm definitely not that kind of singer, so the thing for me that makes every show different is the interaction we have between songs with the crowd. Were you considering backing out of trying to make a living in music or were you in a different headspace? And all of a sudden, we played it, and there was the arrangement. JR: I just gotta get off with my wife in just a second. Doors: 7:00 pm | Show: 8:00 pm. Making I Only See the Moon was supposed to take three weeks.
Defying the conventions of melody and harmony is a strategy The Milk Carton Kids have consciously embraced. KP: It was completely accidental. "And he's my favorite guitar player. Then we started going back and realizing that we really could tell the story through these various recordings at different stages of how the album came together.
It was very surreal at some points, just standing in the room with some of these people. He set all kinda of records at cal, division one pack 10 football, and played in the CFL for a few years after that. However, there are other artists who crave more than chart-toppers and fame; they live for the music itself. And I think for the first time, we're in a unique position of having as much to look back on and to miss — you know, to remember fondly and also to regret — as we have to look forward to. It's the difference between being single and being married and trying to live a happy life, you know? KP: No, like the Blue Ridge Mountains in Kentucky could be called the Rockies if somebody wanted to call them that, but there was already a Rocky Mountain range.
Very shortly after that I met Joey, and, as they say, the rest is history. I want to know a little bit about the Another Day, Another Time project. Yesterday, I was listening to Waxahatchee's [Saint Cloud], which is a wonderful album. So take a break, get your houses in order, do some side projects, hang out at the Largo, eat pie at DuPars, maybe go to Disneyland, get a little ink on your arms, and catch some Dodger games. How does working with Kenneth compare to operating in solo mode? What was the title and a sample lyric from the first song that you wrote? We went to college together, and he played on our college team, then he came and played here. Now they're back to basics. JR: The one Canada reference that always sticks out in my mind, from the Simpsons, is when someone suggests that they're going to go to Canada, and Homer Simpson says, basically, I think this is a pretty good quote, he says "Oh, man… Why would we leave America to go to America Junior? Each episode is told from the point of view of the musicians that have dedicated their lives to it. I was having a conversation about Ireland with Joan Baez — I don't know how that became the topic of choice, but it was — and then I was walking up to John Goodman while he was rehearsing his lines as the emcee of the night. Ten years and five records later, they count two Grammy nods among their accomplishments — plus a top spot on the lineup at the new Oasis Music Festival, set for May 11-15.
You can't argue with that. From their first release back in early 2011 through 2016, they have been hardcore road warriors playing concerts and festival dates around the globe. Sometimes you have good things to say, just on their own. We've done four albums that way, and it felt like we were going to take another lap around the field. They're the same car.
