On a side note, can we please take a moment to appreciate the book cover; it is gorgeous! Some of the other characters lacked the same complexity as Marvin and I think the writing could still use some improvement, but I really enjoyed the audiobook narration and recommend that format if you're looking to pick up the book. Knowing also few friends who lost their twin siblings early, the pain that comes with that is hard to put into words, but I did appreciate Coles' attention to and openness with Marvin's grief. I would agree with that assessment, but I don't think that it necessarily made the MC less relatable. I needed more depth. Because it is GLORIOUS. No, Tyler Johnson Was Here isn't a literary masterpiece—it's very YA, and it's as subtle as a brick (an observation which Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie decries in Americanah, because not all black-voices literature has to be subtle to be powerful)—but its merits lie elsewhere. This book is very relevant considering its nature and I think that's what makes it so powerful and emotional. Granted, the racism that Marvin and his friends experience begin even before that party hits the pages, but it's a turning point of the novel that sends Marvin reeling in horror and desperate to find answers when it seems no one else of authority (particularly where the police are concerned) can help. It was an amazing read, and I can only hope that with stories like this, more minds can be opened to the very real world problems we still have. There's a lot left open at the end of this book, but that works very well for it, because it shows better, and more implicitly, how much work needs to be done to right the wrongs done by racism to this society. We need to acknowledge that Tyler and Marvin's story is not fiction, it's the reality for black people throughout America. Marvin is our narrator and he tells the story with an emotional connection that keeps you invested once the story really picks up. He says that it's because he wants to help their mother out more around the house, but I think, that he was doing it because he wanted to feel safe or feel that he could protect himself if the time came down to it with another encounter.
