The actor, with his scarecrow frame and possibly the sincerest eyes in movies, pulls off a similar feat here, playing the role of jester with zeal but also keeping Riley's film grounded in a place of real human emotion. We are so powerful when we work in concert and when we can put aside our differences for some greater collective good, and you see that in this film, particularly towards the end. One of the interesting aspects about Detroit is that she's so passionate about using her artistic voice for social justice. As he grounds this aforementioned surreal reality he exists within in a way that allows we as audience members to have something to grasp onto as we're taken through this unpredictable bit of statement entertainment. There's a lot going on in Sorry to Bother You, Boots Riley's wildly creative sci-fi comedy about a black telemarketer who discovers the key to success is using a "white voice"—and there's not much one can discuss without spoiling the movie. So from jump, it was like sitting in a chair for nine hours, stripping my hair, making it this wild color, which was so different. And so when this came along I was just like, "Finally. I love when the setting is completely believeable, normal people, who could easily be from our world, but their's is totally weird. In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a universe of greed. First, it was written to be nude and I was like, 'Oh lord, please! Would you say it made filming more of a collaborative experience? In Sorry to Bother You, Riley articulates the social anxieties of the times with craft, intelligence, and imagination. His uncle (Terry Crews) is constantly hounding him for the four months' rent he's owed for letting Cash and Detroit hole up in his attached garage. Danny Glover, Michael X. That really seems like such an interesting conundrum as an artist. The Oakland of Sorry To Bother You looks like present-day Oakland, but with magical elements that make it feel like it exists in a universe of its own. A spiky, combative and wry look at issues of race arising on an American Ivy League university campus. So either it's about making myself more bold or fearless or obnoxious than I already am, or it's about making myself shier. And there's this idea of when you're an adult, it's an appropriate way to be when you wanna be taken seriously, and I don't think Lakeith cares about any of that. Both an office-comedy about the soul-sucking nightmare of entry level desk jobs, and a reality-bending sci-fi horror depicting the uprising of a half-horse half-human hybrid species -- it is designed to make you ask questions. I have protested when I was younger, on Capitol Hill protesting the war in Iraq, sat in to get arrested and all that stuff. There's an anarchic energy to the whole movie that never ends even in it's most banal moments so that even when it truly goes bonkers, it never seemed too out of the ordinary to the films world for me. Stanfield's inherent gravity becomes particularly useful as Riley's script wavers in its focus with the mid-film emergence of a villainous CEO played by Armie Hammer, ingeniously cast as the bearded face of debauched capitalistic exploitation, and a plot reveal that gives grotesque, literal-minded meaning to the term "workhorse. This hard-hitting, go-for-broke envelope-pusher may be light on subtlety but rattles and exhilarates in equal measure. The film disorients viewers with a multitude of false endings.
