So it's sticky enough to keep the gasket in the VC valley, but still slippery enough to prevent it from binding up when tightening (similar to lubing an oil filter gasket). For future reference, over-torquing of valve cover bolts is a sure-fire way to get the gasket to leak. So i just tighten it so that it feel a little tight is OK. because it is just a valve's cover just to prevent the engine oil.
