The Thirteen year old singer Marie La Donna's first release on Gateway was her 1963 single "Bobby Baby". Their music seems to appeal to all ages -- some people are taken back to younger days and simpler times, while others just appreciate the pure sounds and vocal intricacies of tight a cappella harmonies. Marcels hit sung by members 2021. The A side is "Lonely Summer, " but I'm slightly partial to this B side... have a listen to the mp3 "snippet"! In 1961, the song surfaced again by a Pittsburgh-based quintet named after a hairstyle (popular in the '20s and '30s, the "marcel" consisted of rows of wavy curly waves, depending on your perspective). This wasn't one of the group's bigger hits, but man is it packed with a punch! Don't neglect the B side of the iconic "Sunshine Of Your Love": It's a Psych Rock classic in its own right.
The Chords: "Sh-Boom" (1954), which was Covered Up by the Crew-Cuts later that year. As a reminder, it was this B side — Part 2 — that topped both the Pop and RnB charts here in the U. S. The Essex. This great Girl Group single first got airplay for this B side in December 1963. This group, with Walt Maddox on lead, recorded a song called "Bells" to be used in the movie "I'll Take Sweden" (starring Bob Hope, Dina Merrill, Frankie Avalon, and Tuesday Weld), released in June 1965. The Don McLean single "Vincent" features this great B side from his pre-"American Pie" LP, "Tapestry. Marcels hit sung by members band. This terrific rockabilly B side of "I Walk The Line" was re-released and became a minor hit in 1969 with some "live" background effects thrown in. Bachman-Turner Overdrive. This rare 1978 single features two dynamite Funky Soul-style dancers you won't want to miss. Personally, I think it's one of the best Shirelles sides ever, so I've made an mp3 "snippet" so I can hear it as often as I like! It was released on Wooden Nickel Records a subsidiary of RCA. Sly & The Family Stone. This promo copy makes clear that the "plug side" is "A New Man, " but I think you'll find that "Curly" is just as good. Even so, this B side is a totally unexpected revelation: A terrific Northern Soul-style dancer that you won't want to miss!
This B side has an unusual rhythm section that sounds just like something Sir Douglas Quintet might concoct. The A side ("Have A Cigar") is an edited version of the 5:24 album track, while this flip is the full 7:25 album cut. Both sides are great British power pop, 1960's style, but frankly this tuneful flip takes the cake for me. In 1960, the group known as the Four Lovers evolved into the Four Seasons, with Frankie Valli as the lead singer, Bob Gaudio (formerly of the Royal Teens) on keyboards and tenor vocals, Tommy DeVito on lead guitar and baritone vocals, and Nick Massi on electric bass and bass vocals. The hairstyle was one, which consisted of deep curls. She recorded and released her first single " Another Night Alone/I'm Glad I Waited" on Gateway Records. This B side is a terrific Deep Soul number; on the strength of the B side alone, we give this single a 2-star recommendation — our highest! Don't miss the superb mid-tempo Northern Soul number on the flip of "Baby You Got It"... have a listen to the mp3 "snippet"! The A side may be the group's sensitive face, but the B side is another terrific garage/psych rocker. The Velvets: "I" (1954). The last one happened on June 7, 2007. Incredibly Long Note: Doowop bands enjoy ending on a literal high note while the music stops for a while then returns as the song starts slowly fading out.
This iconic B side is included on both the Marsh 1001 list and Rolling Stone magazine's list. Their last Colpix efforts occurred in 1963, when they recorded "I Wanna Be The Leader" and "One Last Kiss" at one or two undated sessions. Curiously, "Don't Worry Baby" didn't appear on any of the band's contemporary LPs, only on later compilation albums. It was also Madeline Bell's only chart single. They include The Skyliners, The Marcels, the Del-Vikings, The El Venos, The Four Coins, The Four Dots, The Tempos, and the Stereos. The A side is "The World Owes Me A Livin'". Don't miss the terrific B side on this one... it's got a rhythm section that just won't quit! I wish I knew who was doing the great vocal parts for Madam Palm... man, is she great or what?
