The Patron Saints of Nothing delivers on both counts. Before we jump into the review, this will have spoilers, because I have a ton of thoughts about this particular story. The reader misses out on certain poignant moments because character conversations are held in Filipino; as Jay doesn't speak the language, we're left trying to fill in the blanks.

Patron Saints of Nothing is told from the point of view of Jay Reguero, who lives in the States with his Filipino immigrant father and American mother. The 2nd time that Jay came back to the Philippines, he noticed that vast difference, from how the poor depended on drugs because it was cheaper than food, and from how Jun described in his letters where his parents wanted him to turn away from those who needed help. But now, she doesn't even know what tomorrow will look like. It is due to this character's death that the protagonist travels to his homeland in order to sort out the details of how this character came to die. Ugh, I wish I could have read something on that! Even though Jay did not return to the Philippines to visit in person, he and Jun wrote... I was deeply moved by Jay's journey and the way his relationships with his family, his culture, and his plans for the future developed as he searched for the truth about his cousin. Praise For Patron Saints of Nothing…. The weird moments of romance – Last and not the very least, the romance here was awkward, and somewhat not necessary for some characters, primarily Jay and Mia.

I hope you will choose to pick up Patron Saints of Nothing and lend your voice against the brutality in our country.
