Turning wrenches takes time to gain your confidence, seems like such a simple thing, but there is a skill level to it. I agree, anyone working on their own car should have a factory service repair manual. In short, you won't find a professional mechanic grabbing his torque wrench of any size to put on a component like a water pump. 0 & it was 4 lb-ft in aluminum, which is what the four M6 bolts thread into. I say thank you in advance. In matters like this I think caution should be used. Not picking on you, so please don't take this way. The bolts are small and I've developed a healthy appreciation for stripped threads. Had no problem torquing it to 7. The bolts are all tightened to 20 lb ft. Or if you have a torque angle gauge you torque them all to 11 lb ft and then tighten an additional 80 degrees. So the final torque should be 24N. Over time this will become second nature to you. I admit it, I have never used a torque wrench on the water pump bolts, just 'hand tight'.
So anyhow fast forward to installing the new pump. Considering all the trouble I went through to get to the pump It would kill me to under torque it and have it leak. Because of the low torque you can use loc-tite on the bolt threads if you want. As I was torquing them, 25 ft-lbs seemed like a huge number for a 5/16 bolt. I've never torqued those particular bolts. But torque specs are based on more than the grade and size of bolt right?? Did mine at 15 and sofar so good. Thanks for the kind words. I know its a one job but would like the torque's for reference. Hap makes a good point about using the low end of the torque wrench range. I wasn't able to tap it all the way so i had to shorten the bolt 5mm. I would love to hear from someone that has a service manual for another model (near the 2005 model year) that has the same 3. 7 MIL SPEC MAINTAINED MV'S. The bolts are different sizes but the larger ones are almost 5/16" and 7 ft/lbs sounds to light. After doing a better job of reading the Bentley book, I found where it says 17 ft-# for the GA/GB engines. Something else learned. What concerns me is if some other newbie finds the 25 ft-# number and snaps off a bolt. No tail fins or chrome fountains.
