I had a unfulfilled feeling in me watching this movie. While at the end of the day, this is a movie, everything felt very authentic and you really believed these people were who they said they were thanks to great writing, acting, and direction. It just becomes more awful by the frame. Tom's mutation into a killer is surely startling. I actually winced at the bad acting in "A History of Violence". Fogaty acts like he knows Tom, calls him Joey and informs him that another mob boss, Richie Cusack (WILLIAM HURT), is also interested in him. All in all, I found the movie a HUGE disappointment and I'd be very suprised if this walked away with any major awards come Oscar-time. The plot problem has to do with Tom's re-identification: is he lying when he denies being Joey?

It's a parable, a morality play, a electrically-fast hand-to-hand combat symphony, but above all, it's about people's wishes to be good and peaceful until they are threatened, when they wish for a savior to step between their lives and the paradox of unsympathetic evil that cannot be dissuaded. I was a big believer in the metacritic system before this. Only Tom's young daughter annoyed me, but that's more due to the writing and direction than Heidi Hayes' performance. From his gross out body horror masterpiece "The Fly", to the crazy science fiction thriller "eXistenZ" to the intense pschyodrama of "A Dangerous Method", Cronenberg continuously keeps his movies fresh and exciting as he further expands his eclectic filmography.
