Ard should have come up with the plan, and then Elbrig and Cinza could've been cut. To be completely honest maybe the author could have done a tad more. We have Barrier grit for creating barriers (source material being metals), Drift Grit for creating a cloud of weightlessness (source material being bones) and so many more. The only world-building element that pulled me out was the one use of scotch whisky. The newest member of the gang is Quarrah Khai. For today's first post I am delighted to be reviewing The Thousand Deaths of Ardor Benn the first book in the Kingdom of Grit series by Tyler Whitesides. Though I have to hand it to the author for taking a risk at the end with that big reveal.
It also comes with a higher risk factor. I mean, sure, I could just say, "Hey, holy shit, this book is pretty dang fantastic and you definitely want to read it if you like fantasy and heists and characters who feel like people instead of characters and such a complex, vibrant world with a new magic system and why haven't you read it already, I need someone to talk to about this book, but especially page 627?! It never felt organic. World-building: I don't really want to talk a lot about this a lot, cuz a few of the points I had with respect to geography are spoilers, but *whew*. In my opinion, a couple of small tweaks would greatly benefit the book namely a shorter page-length and tighter plotting on the part of Whitesides as ultimately, The Thousand Deaths of Ardor Benn felt overly long for the story that Whitesides was telling and suffers under the weight of its 700+ page count. A decent, gripping, and concise story can be told within 400-500 pages, 600 at the absolute top whack. Written by: Erica Berry. Ard is supposed to be the man with the plan, right? But when the narration doesn't explain something to us for the nth time, the characters tell us about their feelings. Engines of Empire used this type of magic too and I loved it there also. I think they're worth it. Our main trinity of heroes are the eponymous Ardor Benn, self-proclaimed ruse artist extraordinaire, his pyrotechnician sidekick, Raekon Dorrel, and Quarrah Khai, a thief who takes thieving seriously.
Intelligent, well-balanced, and a fun ride, The Thousand Deaths of Ardor Benn was, to me, a pleasant reminder of all the reasons I still love the fantasy genre. I'll also say that early on this book had me comparing it to The Lies of Locke Lamora, which isn't really fair because 1. in the end they weren't really that similar at all, and 2. But this is just a minor complaint because really, this world is fascinating. He was a perfect vessel to travel the bounds of the story; it was natural to connect with him. For me, this was definitely the highlight of the story.

Ardor and Raek, together with the thief Quarrah, will have to infiltrate the highest levels of society to pull off the heist – but stealing the crown turns out to only be the beginning of the adventures for the crew.
