Parts of this adventure traverse some of the hidden network of unofficial trails that criss cross the Red River Gorge not found on most maps. In January of 2016, I visited the Red River Gorge for the first time with my fab five. They used the picture to confirm with the owner that the hikers had seen their lost pup. We started the trail at 8 AM, and by 9 AM, we were making the turn up the unofficial trail to the base that had haunted me for three long years. Turn right (northeast) to stay on Bison Way Trail until reaching the intersection with Sheltowee Trace at mile 0. This is a good map, but it does not show any of the unofficial trails, though I have sketched in the relevant trails on the modified map section shown in Figure 1. If it weren't for the people panting and whining as they scrambled up the craggy slope, you would never know this was a well traveled trail. Once at the top of the ridge the trails become somewhat hard to follow as there are many social trails leading to various campsites. Battleship Rock provides a beautiful view of Natural Bridge from about a mile away (as pictured above), but the trail eventually leads across the top of the bridge, which in return offers an unobstructed view of the immense Battleship Rock (as pictured below). From the Ohm Hole to Indian Arch and then a short trip out to Adena Arch for the group just as the a light, mist of rain started to fall on us. Luckily forest service crews were able to contain the fire to 200 acres. But it will be another several miles back up the road to the Bison Way Trailhead, so if you're going to do this you need to plan ahead and park another vehicle over there. Four times, I stood with the same person on those cliff edges. This is a very steep and treacherous climb that requires you to scramble up smooth rock surfaces to reach the top of the ridge.
