Renee Carlino delivers an EPIC love story and one of my favorite reads of the year. This is my first Renee Carlino but it definitely won't be my last and I absolutely recommend it. Those last 20% of the book just left a bad taste in my mouth. There are a few times when a book can draw out emotions of such pure joy that you're leaking happy tears all over the screen of your kindle. Though this book fell terribly short for me, I'm still a huge fan and will surely pick up Renée's future books. So please forgive me.
"Harlequin Junkie (Top Pick)". The first problem I had with this book was Trevor. Anyways, imagine her surprise when her roommate comes home with a book she insisted Em had to read, only for Em to discover the book-"All the roads between"- was a semi-memoir, chronicling hers and Jax's childhood, which Jax had written. There was one scene that moved me a little, but most of the other scenes with Emi confronting her past felt hollow and lacked emotional intensity. Both Emiline and Jase were wonderful, well-developed characters. ❝I was guarded and withdrawn, hiding in my relationship with Trevor, in my job as an adjunct professor, in my writing. OMG, I swear on my life this book. So yeah, not a fan, so even with my bestie's huge endorsement I had my doubts. He felt so unreal, but maybe that's just me. "Holy schnikes, this book... Swear on This Life is not a YA book or a new adult book, but it reads like one. However, I think that this story just didn't quite work to deliver on those themes, which is a shame. I loved everything about it from the first to the last page. I have not read anything like it. Both stories told in this book (present and past) were equally interesting and captivating. Reading the events of Emiline's childhood wasn't always easy.
And on page 33 I wrote, "This is how many consecutive days I cried after you broke up with me! "The past would only fester and eat away at us if we tried to hold on to it too tightly. The way that aspect of the story was so much more than just a way to showcase the past, pure genius. At this point in the book, I was desperate to find out Jase's motivations, where his heart lay. But there were equal amounts of time when I stopped and thought about what the author was saying and absorbed her words. Her roommate and best friend Cara tells her to write about what's in her heart and in her past. A smile that knocked me off my feet. There was beauty in his character, the persistence and how patient he was with Emiline, and yes he even went out of his way to write a book just to reach Emiline and make her realize everything. I wanted to know everything about these two, their past, present and what their future could hold. This story will stay with me and I'll read it again many times! Especially because we knew that he'd somehow finished their story despite their separation -- so what had he written? Tears pouring down my cheeks from how much I loved it. It made me wonder what time I had lost and what I've taken for granted. Emiline is shocked and angry Jase told her story in such a way, that he has taken the liberty to reveal her tragic past.
I wanted to hold off on reviewing this since the release is still months away, but I honestly need to get all these feelings out or I am going to combust. With this book, I found exactly that. The story was beautifully written, layered and like I mentioned above so gripping. Yet from the very first page, Emiline is entranced by the story of Emerson and Jackson, two childhood best friends who fall in love and dream of a better life beyond the long dirt road that winds through their impoverished town in rural Ohio. Safety: I'd say that this should be Safe with exception or Not Safe depending on personal preferences. Lily marries Ryle hoping the good will outweigh the bad, and the mother-daughter dynamics evolve beautifully as Lily reflects on her childhood with fresh eyes. I can't get over it. "I'll wait for you to be ready. It just made me think. It's definitely going on my favorites list. You will love it and and won't be able to stop thinking about it long after you finish reading. They reunite and after dealing with some major baggage left over from the past, they get a HFN ending. I tried to have empathy due to her troubled childhood but there is a point where you have to be polite and own your life.
They were separated for twelve years with no contact whatsoever in between and we were just expected to accept them as a couple when they don't even know anything about each other as adults. Me before the book: Me after the book: Once I finished this book, I was very disappointed. Present day Emilene struggles with facing the past that she never let go of and the feelings of betrayal toward Jace for telling her story to the world. She thinks she's happy but is frustrated by her inability to carve her own path, to write something she can get published.
It has a book within a book concept. You know the kind I'm talking about. I'm sad to be rating this story a '3. The past and present storylines were perfectly balanced.
Yet, in her not rushing to finish the story she slowly starts to heal from the pain of her past and fix what isn't working for her in her present. So well written, so well developed. I have highlighted a lot of passages. Both of them were endearing and I have to say I really sympathize with them at some point into the story. When is your life not just your own life... Could it be when you discover someone from that past has co-opted everything.
