The final "est" is that Death Valley is the driest national park in the United States. Just divide 500 or 400 by your focal length to give you the number of seconds your shutter speed should be to avoid too much trailing. To pinpoint their location I wrote to the photographer asking the exact location, perhaps GPS coordinates. When photographing grand landscapes, I consider myself a bit indecisive when it comes to composition. You can find some amazingly unique perspectives and hidden trails just by simply 'getting lost'.

We were getting ready to pack things up when I noticed some new color developing in the southern sky.
Why did the rock curve and change direction? According to the National Park Service, the history of Death Valley goes somewhat like this…. It almost hit me like a visual epiphany. Seemingly out of nowhere song birds start singing, crickets start chirping, dragonflies begin buzzing, and even frogs start to croak! There are many, but the most commonly visited dunes are the accessible Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. It has been almost two years since I last visited Death Valley National park, but the varied landscape of that place keeps calling me back. So as you travel around the playa, be on the lookout for these crackly areas. It was a photo of interesting mud flats with mountains in the background. Then it was a matter of finding something that also formed a leading line. To get the first image I added a 4 stop neutral grad filter on the lens to reduce the sky value. If you're lucky enough to have the wind blowing the sand, be sure to take good tight goggles with you to protect your eyes.
To change the lens, I had to climb down a dune to block out some of the wind and prevent the sand particles from destroying the sensor. Everywhere we turned there were flats. The weather in Death Valley can be quite calm throughout most of the year, and this isn't necessarily a good thing for photographers. Eureka Dunes are the tallest dunes in California and perhaps the tallest in North America.
