I bought the ebook of Girls of Paper and Fire shortly after it released, then I bought the second book after its release. While at first it may seem that Lei could develop feelings for her captor (she first describes the king as handsome), don't worry: this won't happen. What most distinguishes this book, though, is how incisively and intoxicatingly Ngan writes about love * Publisher's Weekly * A vital and energetic novel... that mounts with increasing tension towards an explosive conclusion.... The version of Lei who was taken to the Hidden Palace at the beginning of Girls of Paper and Fire is very different from the Lei who sets off on her quest in Girls of Storm and Shadow. The Girls of Paper and Fire series does not have a new book coming out soon. The King's men find the people who attacked the Palace and interrogate them. She cannot let herself hate what's being done to her because, like the last girl, it might break her entirely.
In the first book, Girls of Paper and Fire, we learn about the three castes: Moon (full animal demon), Steel (half animal demon, half human), and Paper (full human). Wren brings Lei some food. I really enjoyed how Ngan threaded the implications of being Paper caste, ideas of 'possession' of other human beings, dehumanisation, slavery and servitude, sex in relation to power, and resistance that were meaningful to Lei's personal journey across the book. Over weeks of training in the opulent but stifling palace, Lei and eight other girls learn the skills and charm that befit being a king's consort. As a reader everything Lei knows about Wren you know about Wren. All I can say is that Ngan explores this beautifully, and I'm definitely excited for Girls of Storm and Shadow. This not only functions to capture the imagination, but works as a rather brilliant metaphor.

The Steel Cast is the middle cast, represented by half human-half demon people. Kirkus Reviews Issue: Feb. 1, 2023. Each in their own way they deal with what is happening to them. Every year, the Moon caste's king claims eight "Paper Girls" as concubines. Lei is a member of the Paper caste, the lowest and most oppressed class in Ikhara. I was going to write a book review for this, but found myself really engaging with the themes of the story – so I guess this isn't really a book review.
You won't want to miss it. Really, this is the key point of this post. The Paper Girls are presented to the King during the Unveiling Ceremony. Rather, I guess this is my critical analysis of the themes that I really enjoyed in the story. Search for a digital library with this title. It's quite a hard book to read at times, but it's also a book that shows the good side of things. I felt that Lei had sufficient motivations external to her relationship to follow the course she pursues, but that could be a matter of opinion. Hard science fiction. Paper caste women exist in a state of intersectional oppression. I wanted to know more about her. "Lush... a novel you need to read. It will certainly keep you gripped as you're reading it.
