"Exodus: Gods and Kings" is a movie on a quest to be epic, but it never quite gets there. Story: Set in the Mayan civilization, when a man's idyllic presence is brutally disrupted by a violent invading force, he is taken on a perilous journey to a world ruled by fear and oppression where a harrowing end awaits him. But as much as Scott's film nails the big spectacle elements – the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, even just the recreation of ancient Egypt are all top notch – it lacks a clear central message and ends up just being a bit of a mess. And the third is an action movie filled with political intrigue. The baby-in-the-basket story is told, not seen; when we meet Moses, he's a man, living like a brother alongside Ramses, with Ramses' father, the pharoah Seti (John Turturro). Scott is just there to shoot a lot of this much the way he did Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and Robin Hood - in other words, substitute out the pyramids with colisseums, or castles, or other things, and you'd have similar hyper-kinetic action (sometimes but not always too fast) and actors who are well-trained and versed and there to do the work, but not much more. In some ways, they've done that, but GLADIATOR was a much better scripted movie. It is funny how this religious tale does in fact turn into a very Robin Hood-esque action flick midway through. That's like going to a Skynrd concert and not getting to hear "Free Bird. Despite the conflict between them being at the heart of the story, the movie is structured following the battle between Moses and Ramses. I mean, Moses is supposed to be the messenger of God (along with Aaron) but for the most part he seems more in the dark with what's going on around him, an onlooker who doesn't agree with God over certain things. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. Odd choices like God sending an overacting child as his messenger do not exactly help. The issue of boils was nicely implemented with decent makeup effects and they lasted some time too, when the plot moved on people still suffered from boils, they didn't just go away for the next scene.
