I'll likely get burned at the stake for ranking this below 4 stars, but I've just never been as impressed with it as popular opinion holds. I rubbed out a few flakes just to see how it rubs, though it? Not sweet forward, Penzance is supported by natural, subtle Virginia undertones which keeps Penzance from being acrid. I find it appealing that this is such a well rounded tobacco, but at the same time, none of these elements shines in a way that compels me to want it the way some of my blends do. Will always have on hand. Really the only downside with this is that it's practically never available... what's the thing with Germain's blend being nearly never in-stock anywhere?! Further down the bowl, a mild smoky Latakia aroma evolves. On the plus side, this tobacco does not have any off-notes. It comes in krumble kake that easily breaks into either large or small pieces for your pipe. Taste is just right, with no lat smoked ham aftertaste. A local cigar merchant with a pipe side line for years has stocked Penzance, Margate, and Stonehaven in bulk jars, without many noticing. The room note is full and musty and may not be overly appreciated by the nonsmoker. Still this stuff is excellent! I'm normally averse to blends heavily laden with latakia and based on the aroma was even more reluctant to smoke it. Difficult to add much to the praises it has already received. In my first tin, I didn't like it at all after this, in my second, the dull, musty flavor wasn't as evident but I was able to finish it off and enjoy it as well. When this goes OOP, watch out, it will be gouged to heck, there will be silent auctions for the tiniest amount of it, there will be blends and competitions dedicated to mimicking it and trying to match it with what's available. It was rather wet at the end of the bowl and I wasn? It is, simply put, sublime, and is what makes Penzance unique. I'm not trying to be funny here but I believe one might catch a better buzz by going outside & just breathing some of our good, old polluted air. Not saying it lacks strength, but somewhat monotone to me. And the complexity of the blend revealing different note going trough the bowl never ceased to amaze me. Is Penzance worth the outrageous prices that are being charged on ebay? Avoid actions and intimate conversations with family and colleagues. Taste will turn to a burnt taste.
Highest recommendation and well worth the money. An occasional treat, it is brought out of the hanger on special occasions. Long matured and easily crumbled to facilitate pipe filling. Lighting took a few more lights that I would have liked, mostly due to the high moisture content. I'll certainty call it a four star, but I don't think I'll throw out my stash of other blends yet. Penzance has become my yardstick and I can't see, so far any reason pack anything else when I travel. I say that the room note is "Tolerable to Strong" based on what others (non-pipe-smokers) have said but, personally, I loved the smell when others have smoked it in my presence. Strong||None Detected||Very Full||Tolerable to Strong|. It does take a little bit of effort to light as it is somewhat moist, and I usually have to do one or two relights while I'm smoking the bowl, but all and all, it's worth it. I find it hard to keep lit, and if you put the flame to it too often and long, youll get a sore tongue, and a bitter tobacco. The slices are easily rubbed out.
Good as it was, I could still taste the latakia two days later despite intervening meals and brushing of teeth. Anyway, I took it as a loss and traded it off. Turned up the city, I broke off the notch. The mixture, once I learned how to rub and pack it, lit easily and stayed lit. Let me know, I am interested to find out now.
I used ceramic and meerschaum filters (no basma filters yet) and the meer filters apparently are best. This is a balkan style English with Turkish tobaccos front and center. I am not claiming this is the greatest latakia blend on the planet, but it is very good. The bulk version seems to be the bits and ends of the kakes left over after they have trimmed, cut, and sliced the kakes to fit so perfectly in the tin. Crumbles easily into the bowl.
