They were on the verge of growing apart a little bit, but still had that unbreakable bond. The pacing more than anything. And there were just way too many similarities with "The Hate U Give" so it felt a bit like this book was trying to piggy-back off of that book's success. Even then, her motives are a bit askew at first. Some the character seemed to be underdeveloped. I didn't really get sucked into the story until a bit later, the first few chapters were for setting up, but it did really slowly. Living in 2018 one would think that the world is a safe and accepting place, but the truth is that we are nowhere near close to acceptance. I'd give "Tyler Johnson Was Here" a solid 4 stars, notably because I connected with the read on some personal levels and because it does manage to do well by delving into issues of cultural pride and identity, police brutality, the current events and social climate surrounding Black Lives Matter, and the struggle for recognition/fight against dehumanization so often noted and experienced in the African-American community.
Because you pretty much know that Tyler dies at some point thanks to the description, you're waiting for that moment while reading the book. Yes, he does die, but in the beginning of the book, we get to meet him and love him, and feel conflicted the same way Marvin does. Marvin wants to go to MIT, he knows that life is challenging due to the color of his skin and he tries to make sure he's never in the position where his life is threatened, sometimes it just happens. Coles tackles a lot of different issues in the book it is an important perspective to read from. I would have loved if these little details were not left hanging. I wish that there were more books with black characters in without that being the main focus. This book is very relevant considering its nature and I think that's what makes it so powerful and emotional. He was all over the place as a character. I forget to breathe for a moment. It's a fairly short book - only 300 pages - and essentially the first half of it is set up and reporting Tyler missing. I have a sister who is basically my best friend, and I just couldn't shake that feeling of the love I have for her while reading this and seeing Marvin lose his best friend, his other half. So the police knew at least of one teenage black boy who was dead, why in the world didn't they come back to the family right away to view the body? The change needs to happen but the system won't change until the people demand it and fight for it. Basically only not a five because it's very slice-of-lifey and that's just never going to be my thing. I personally couldn't. There was something lacking that I can't quite put my finger on, maybe it was the length of the novel (it's only 304 pages) that couldn't quite make it a 5 star read. However, reading this book makes me realize how the fiction we read can easily be real. This tackles racism and police brutality, and is an important and powerful read.
This is just my honest thoughts and opinions about this book. He often thinks he should do or say more than what he does, so when Tyler dies, he feels a tremendous guilt that he should have done something to help Tyler.
