I mean, what it's talking about should be something that's acknowledged and talked about in society period, and Marvin often shares his feelings, I mean it's in his point of view, but he doesn't shy away from his anger, confusion or frustration. That aspect alone is reason enough to read this novel at least once. Now y'all already know that I love reading books about social justice, and that's exactly what this book was. I think I finished reading it in about 2 hours, which is quick for a novel of this length for me, and a big part of that is definitely to do with the pacing. Of course the topic makes it hard not to compare to The Hate You Give, and while the writing and the pacing means it doesn't quite reach that level of success to me, if you're looking for a book to read next after THUG, I'm definitely recommend Tyler Johnson Was Here. I hated this book with everything in me. For me Tyler Johnson Was Here is less about what happened to Tyler and more about his twin brother Marvin's grief. Like many novels that are novels written about movements or political issues, the plot is secondary to the agenda of the author. Andie's body was never recovered, and Sal was assumed by most to be guilty of abduction and murder. I really like all of these kids. He gives an intimate look at the emotional fallout that will irrevocably impact the victim's family. And, as I think most of you may have guessed, the shooting occurred unprovoked. The characters in here feel very undeveloped. The book talks a lot about grief, loss, police brutality, blackness, among other things. I've read some reviews by people who were annoyed that the book ended without a resolution. I have never cried so much in my life before (except when I'm cutting an onion. ) I just like that it's not aggressive or sensual or any of the typical covers with black teens on the cover. Tyler lacked a bit o backstory too, and at the end, I'm still left with a couple of questions on my mind. However, there were a lot of parts in the book where At the end of this book, I was felt feeling a little hopeless and hopeful at the same. This book will give you the feels, you will laugh, cry, and get mad. I don't think that show even comes on TV anymore. I understand that his mind was very much occupied by a traumatic event and I could see how much he cared for and appreciated the people in his life.
