My editor was like, "This might be too much for this one romance novel. A Regency author to watch. From the characters she creates to the way she incorporates banter and empowered women in all of her stories I am always instantly hooked on each of her titles. And then proceeded to not listen to her and treat her like she had no mind of her own. I always envisioned it as a marriage of convenience, so that much has stayed true. I was also interested in the familial subplots of the novel. There are few books that I look forward to for an entire year; To Marry and To Meddle is one of those books. The heroines in the first two books in the series are larger-than-life characters, and while Emily has always been a willing participant in their shenanigans, she's certainly overshadowed by them. Instead, the conflict in the story comes mostly from Julian's insistence that Emily be the irreproachable society wife she's been brought up to be, while Emily wants to take an interest in the threatre and to tread a different path to the one previously laid out for her. I loved their banter and even their arguments kept me clinging to every word. Fusty, dusty, and tiring. Emily and Julian end up having more in common than they think and what starts off as a contract between two strangers quickly becomes a relationship. The beginning was strong and gave me DEVIL IN WINTER vibes as we watched them enter into this super quick marriage of convenience.

It's a whole lot of fun and I couldn't really say why I didn't fully love this one. I've done some research on actual actresses from the Regency era and what their lives look like, and the way that polite society interacted with the theater world. To Marry and to Meddle has a release date of April 5, 2022. I absolutely love Martha Waters' writing style. I'm not as interested in writing unmarried heroines in a historical because it makes your job as an author a lot trickier because there are all these strict rules governing their behavior. I love the premise and these two balance off of each other perfectly.
Other readers criticized this book for its lack of conflict, which I take issue with because I felt there was plenty of internal conflict. I love the friendship this trio shares and that they care so deeply for each other. I've had a huge soft spot for Emily and Julian since book 1, and Waters couldn't have given them a more perfect story.

I loved the extra glimpses we got of Sophie in this book, the meal with the legend that is the Dowager Marchioness & discussions of cattle is such a treat 🤣 The waistcoat revelation was equal parts adorbs and cringe, but lolz at the glee Diana took in planning that outfit - I found her personality a little more grating this time around. Ultimately a mixed bag. Emily's happy ending mercifully involves a lot less plotting than those of Waters' previous heroines, and all the feline hijinks brought about by Cecil Lucifer Beelzebub Turner-Belfry adds to the sweet, cozy feelings you can't help but revel in while reading this book. The marriage of convenience tension was there, just perhaps more subtle than some readers would like. Lily Bloom is still running a flower shop; her abusive ex-husband, Ryle Kincaid, is still a surgeon. Lily marries Ryle hoping the good will outweigh the bad, and the mother-daughter dynamics evolve beautifully as Lily reflects on her childhood with fresh eyes. Despite the better option right in front of her, an unexpected complication forces Lily to cut ties with Atlas, confront Ryle, and try to end the cycle of abuse before it's too late. I didn't pay attention to the details during the pretrial. He can pretend to be as rakish as he likes, but he is an admirable character, and those are some of my favourite love interests.
