Don't put in a novel's worth of foreshadowing only to decide not to have any of the plot points come to fruition. If you are writing sci-fi you may have a little more leeway here, but overall, the advice still holds. In summary, a good ending quietens the conflict, provides a hopeful picture of the character's development and makes the book memorable. We don't really know them, just the idea of them. How can she possibly explain to her thirteen year old daughter that she's in love with her favorite celebrity crush, not to mention one that is half her age? Whether it's a happy ending they are pleased about, a moral lesson that sticks in their minds, or an ambiguity that lingers as they consider what will come next, whichever of these common ending tropes you use, you want your story to feel 'complete'. Now if only the producers would pay attention to the readers. I can totally see why Solene was charmed by him! I know some readers identified with Solène's rediscovery of her own worth after divorce. And, like any good story, I was left wanting more. Nothing about this book was supposed to be up my alley. What happened to that guy? It is a journey that spans continents as Solène and Hayes navigate each other's disparate worlds: from stadium tours to international art fairs to secluded hideaways. For one, the leading lady's name is now Sophie and she's 40 years old. Through ALL of the various incredible and incredulous moments that can happen when you're dating one of the most famous members of a HUGELY famous boy-band. Except he keeps pursuing her and he is obviously paying attention to everything she says, and he is much more mature than one would assume. This particular author takes my favorite path of writing: she doesn't spend time telling me about something; instead, she shows it in the plot and dialogue. What if it was 5 years, 10 years, or even 20 years? Within whatever rules exist for the world of your novel, the perfect resolution should become obvious in hindsight.
