The amount of time the rocks would be moving would range from a few seconds to many minutes. Since I wanted to emphasize darkness and drama, an incoming rainstorm – with its foreboding clouds – provided an excellent complement to the expansive cracks shown in the foreground of this photograph. These floods carry mud which undergoes a cycle of drying, cracking, and crumbling. This is a great place to view and photograph a huge section of Death Valley from high up, including Badwater Basin in your composition. We just returned from a long trip to Death Valley National Park, one of my favorite places for photography and exploration. Until then they are pretty cool to spot in the park. To find these mud cracks, enter Death Valley from the east on Highway 190 or travel south down Highway 190 from the north part of Death Valley National Park. Especially this one which we never leave the house without because it plays nice with our dear friend, earth 🙂. The frame and liner add 14 inches to both the horizontal and vertical dimensions of a print. It was during the winter months and we found ourselves amazed by the heat (the park averages 80° in the dead of winter). The other cool thing I enjoyed shooting on the west side of the road were these cool green rocks.
Fast forward to the present. I used a small aperture (f/16) for depth of field to help ensure that both the foreground and background are in sharp focus. The dune field is located in Panamint Valley and the trailhead for the dunes is accessed off of a long dirt road. Visibility was 0 and it was looking like a sunset might not even happen. And you will be captivated by the combination of both the simplicity and complexity present in these fine art Death Valley photographs. All this to say, trust me when I tell you that there's a plethora of epic things to do in Death Valley National Park and good planning is the name of the game. Rainbow Canyon provides a wonderful spot to watch and photograph military pilots traversing the canyon and flying by, sometimes just a few hundred feet away.
