My absolute favorite character in the entire book was the curmudgeonly old man, Mr. Lazenby, who eats a piece of pie every day to get messages from his dead wife. The story reminded me of The Girl Who Chased the Moon including the estranged family member returning to a small southern town and the Magical Realism centered on food. It is what I would consider a "happy" book. Plus this book made me crave pie like you wouldn't believe, and I don't even like pie. Without the love, the trees will wither and die. I read one book and I intended to read more, but then that idea slipped between the cracks. The main character gets a chance to run a bakery/café? This one was a buddy read with Dana, which we both enjoyed. Wicklow is a town which is struggling to say alive, despite the best efforts of the town folk. Highly engaging Southern Fiction with largely likeable characters, a great setting and a bit of romance as well as a lot about families and secrets.
Essentially, continuing the tradition of baking and selling the pies makes it hard for Anna Kate to sell the cafe and abandon the people who want dreams and the blackbirds that cross over from the land of the dead to deliver messages. Anna Kate is a descendant of the Callow women whose cosmic job is to bake the locally famous pies. Shes been uprooted from everything familiar and has settled in a small, two-stoplight town where she knows no one. She looked up from her charm bracelet, which she'd been worrying in slow circles around her wrist, and stared out the window. Much like the living and breathing blackbirds in the tree for birdwatchers, the existence of the pie is the opportunity to witness magic. The 24 blackbirds make a rare appearance in daylight to swoop past during Granny Zee's funeral, and an eager bird-watcher reports the phenomenon of a flock of Turdas merula, a kind of blackbird not ever seen on this continent. And is it true that the blackbird pie served at the cafe is magical and provides those who eat it with a special message from a deceased loved one? I made the classic mistake of thinking that this meant biscuits in the Aussie sense of the word, so I was thinking it was a kind of cracker.
I can't argue it, but deep down I'm formulating a story where a woman's purpose and happiness is found in the Big City with her Big Career and not back in her hometown, because that's a thing too, Hallmark Channel. The cover of this book 😍should also not be overlooked. It's the story of two women struggling to find themselves amidst tragedy and outside expectations, which is the set up for a great book. Thankfully, had my notes but they reference% instead of page numbers. I enjoyed the mystery/magical/dream/message parts of it.
