Tudor also demonstrates an enviable ability to blend nostalgia and horror together in a toxic soup, haunting her protagonists with the actions of their youth. There are a few surprising twist and turns along the way and in Joe with his chequered past and outstanding gambling debts we have a character that is far removed from the normal teacher and now he faces the prospect of deep buried secrets resurfacing putting him in grave danger. And only Joe knows who is really at fault. After reading and thoroughly enjoying this author's first book I was really looking forward to this one and I wasn't disappointed! This is now followed by another stand alone novel, The Taking of Annie Thorne, which builds on the atmosphere of what came more and, in my opinion, the result is even more successful.
This novel was highly suspenseful and gruesome. The chapters had very decent length and were just flying by for me. C. The references to 1992 brought back so many memories as Joe is the same age as me and so the talk about wham bars and Walkmans had me feeling nostalgic. Lots of twists, and shocks as expected and different from anything I've read before. I really enjoyed the chalk man but I think I enjoyed this more. The protagonist in this book is Joe Thorne, a teacher, who has very serious gambling problems. It's almost as if the past is repeating itself. Time is simply a great eraser. The Taking of Annie Thorne is a book that will make you conflicted. Never fear: while the setup is the same, the plot takes off in a completely different direction, and you'll be glued to the page from the end of the gut-twisting prologue. The Taking Of Annie Thorne has the chilling haunting Eco of The Chalk Man it takes you grips you holds you tight until you are breathless with fear and shock! He was bullied at school and in fact eventually joined the gang of bullies himself. Her debut novel THE CHALK MAN blew me away; her sophomore novel THE HIDING PLACE - released this week - is even better. I've never really liked the term 'page-turner' but this definitely falls into that category. I like Joe for different reasons. And there's a shock twist which always makes things good.

Admittedly the first part of this book is a much more gentle pace than I am used to but from reading The Chalk Man, I had confidence that once it was all set up, it would speed up a bit towards the end. It made the reading of each timeline easier to follow, and was very interesting to observe how he has changed outside of the book. Joe has a lot of skeletons in his closet and you never see where the next one will pop out. She wasn't the same not the fun loving Little Annie that he loved, she was a stranger someone he didn't know the sister he once loved he was now scared to death off! The Taking of Annie Thorne is her latest release.

I'm not sure that the new direction was the right one, because it left a lot to be desired and there were a lot of unanswered questions when it got to the end. I loved Chalk Man it was one of my favourite reads this year, so when Nick and Lucy said they had read this I knew I had to read it too. Everyone was traumatised and a search was immediately underway but it was to be of no avail. It's happening again. ' You'll spot some excellent "easter eggs" in this book which I loved and instantly wanted to tweet about them but then couldn't because spoilers, so that was frustratingly brilliant. At about 350 pages, I think this is a book that anybody could pick up at any given time. Something happened to my sister. C. Tudor is an author not to be missed, and her second novel is – difficult as it may be to believe – even better than her first. Unfortunately, this is often the case for sophomore novels and while The Taking of Annie Thorne is a brilliant read in its own right, it does stand in the shadow of two other books. If you haven't read CJ Tudor's debut The Chalk Man then why not?

Can he unearth the truth and importantly can he survive it? But he is not welcome there. When his sister went missing the whole village went looking for her, but when she returned something wasn't right and from this day Joe became frightened of his little eight-year-old sister Annie. Has all you would want from a good read!! And because of this, The Taking of Annie Thorne deserves a 8/10 star rating from me.
