The Taking Of Annie Thorne Synopsis

The opening prologue is extremely grim and bleak as two police officers investigate a crime scene, setting the tone for the entire novel. Something happened to my sister. I really enjoyed The Chalk Man and personally I think The Taking Of Annie Thorne is even better. As usual, there are plot twists throughout the story and unlike those in The Chalk Man, the plot twists here managed to catch me by surprise. Sometimes I have seen this stuff coming right out of left field and spoiling the book for me, but here it all flows very nicely and it's blatantly obvious from the outset that things are a bit spooky down in Arnhill. Once more we have the fright associated with children who in some way have strayed from what is right, even what is real. It offers an opportunity for Joseph Thorne to flee from serious gambling debts and apply for the teaching post - in the village where he spent his formative years. A sense of unease, a feeling of gathering dread, lurking in the background, creeping around, hiding in the shadows, a serpent ready to strike and the epilogue, well, the epilogue is fucking chilling. Having Joe as a morally grey character really added to the mystery that was already here and present in the book, and I'm all for it! This is a creepy and atmospheric mystery tale that had this reader simply wanting to know what was ultimately behind the strange goings on. The Taking of Annie Thorne is a tense thriller that gave me a serious case of the heebie jeebies.

Sometimes I find writing book reviews challenging. Thank you to Netgalley, CJ Tudor and Penguin Michael Joseph for my ARC of the Taking of Annie Thorne. But whether this ensures they are perceived as a victim or survivor, hunter or prey, blameless or otherwise, is a distinction that blurs over time. I now need to read this author's previous book, as this one was so good and the 'Chalkman' received such rave reviews. But Joe has enough evidence to ruin reputations that have taken a lifetime to build, and he's in debt to some very serious people who are slowly but surely running out of patience.

The Taking Of Annie Thorne Review

If you are concerned that juggling both at the same time is confusing, I can assure you, I didn't find this to be the case at all. I couldn't put it down. Joe's return to Arnhill is met with animosity by most. Another creepy offering from this author. The story goes back and forth between past and present but not in an obtrusive way. Because sometimes my own little sister scared me to death... NOW. It was very reminiscent of an early Stephen King novel but I won't say the name as it may be a potential spoiler for those who may have read it. C. Tudor has it big time - The Taking of Annie Thorne is terrific in every way' Lee Child. Could it be that his on the run from the people he owes money too, could it be that he just wants to come back to a place he called home or is it because he wants REVENGE! C. J Tudor really captures the depression and despondency of Arnhill, the town and the school, where nothing changes and outsiders are frowned upon. The Taking Of Annie Thorne by C J Tudor, read by Richard Armitage.

I happily put C. Tudor on my elusive list of favorite authors. I will be recommending this to everyone I know. More than that, the mine has been eradicated. Also I have to give one line away and only other readers of C. J Tudor will get it and that is 'Better than a real head, i suppose'. When her peers were reading Judy Blume, she was devouring Stephen King and James Herbert. But he is not welcome there. Those who want to make a difference and those who can't get a job anywhere else. How did you enjoy The Taking of Annie Thorne? The Taking Of Annie Thorne has the chilling haunting Eco of The Chalk Man it takes you grips you holds you tight until you are breathless with fear and shock! As with The Chalk Man, Tudor attempts to deliver another last-minute reveal but it lacks the same impact as its predecessor and merely resulted in an intrigued eyebrow raise, rather than a jaw drop. There was no point of this book that left me completely satisfied, and I was sorry that it didn't carry on the way that it seemed to be going at the beginning.

The Taking Of Annie Thorne Movie

Unfortunately, this is often the case for sophomore novels and while The Taking of Annie Thorne is a brilliant read in its own right, it does stand in the shadow of two other books. The Chalk Man is her first novel. As with The Chalk Man, Tudor grabs us by the throat in the opening chapter, and doesn't let up all the way through. Bringing all these together, CJ Tudor has done it again folks, with another striking cover and a tale that is guaranteed to disturb and to rattle your thoughts. The novel is billed as horror so there are the requisite creepy moments with beetles and Annie Thorne's behaviour, told in flashback to 1992, at relevant points but, to me, the real horror lay in the Lord of the Flies attitude permeating the local school. Can he unearth the truth and importantly can he survive it? With his return, storm clouds are rolling in and the locals don't want him back, fearing nothing good can come of his return. It's almost as if the past is repeating itself. This is a brilliantly eerie novel that at times chills you to the bone. After reading the first few pages of this book, I already have a strong feeling that this book is darker and creepier than The Chalk Man. Not only will he be stepping into the footsteps of a dead woman but he'll also be occupying the cottage that was left abandoned following the crime scene at the start of the book. Great use of the claustrophobic small-town setting, secrets-galore, and a cast of characters with multi-layered motives keep you turning pages at a rate of knots. I really wanted to give this book a five star rating, however, I found this too much like The Chalk Man; the flawed main character returning to his home town after events from his childhood start to happen again, a depressed atmosphere of the town, tension between childhood friends, a feeling of the supernatural. When he returns, he meets up with people from his past and encounters their children whilst working at the school.
