But Moreno brings it in spades, and hits all the notes with a smooth perfection that doesn't jar the reader, but sure as hell keeps you on your toes. It was funny and strange right up until Vera was killed, and Thiago's world became unbearable. I loved this choice by Moreno. Loved the beginning sections, thought it was a solid exploration of grief, and felt that there were some genuinely creepy moments. The entire novel is written in that You style, by Thiago, addressed to Vera, as it follows his Dantean descent into the darker and darker levels of the underworld. When he hears that his fierce, beautiful twin sister Savannah, a well-known New York poet, has once again attempted suicide, he escapes his present emasculation by flying north to meet Savannah's comely psychiatrist, Susan Lowenstein. The anger and grief Thiago is trying to deal with absolutely leap off the page as Moreno tugs on the reader's heart over and over again. He sells their condo and moves to a cabin in a secluded area of Colorado. Despite those echoes, This Thing Between Us is not a pastiche of other horror novels; it's a fresh take on the genre that celebrates and pays tribute to its elements, from the gore to the cerebral stuff. Part of it is presented as a first-person stream of consciousness and as things get stranger you may wonder whether Thiago is an unreliable narrator as he begins to experience odd events in the build up to Vera's sudden and tragic death. Moreno makes clever use of structure to maximize dread, opening with Vera's funeral and then doubling back, while references to famous horror novels and films trick readers into thinking they're following a familiar path before the tragic plot veers wildly off-map. She starts, but we don't know if it stops. This seemingly starts out as a ghost story, but transforms into something Lovecraftian as it gets going.
