The author has managed to craft a character that gave me the chills. Or rather, a version of the truth that Joe tells himself, perhaps to salve his own guilt at what happened to eight-year-old Annie. However, I read this book a lot quicker than I had been managing other books of similar length. And there's a shock twist which always makes things good.

There was something missing throughout this book, and a lot had to do with the fact that there was no context for anything that was happening with the characters or what they had found. Being in debt through gambling he decides to leave town and apply for a teaching job at Arnhill Academy, a school he used to attend as a youngster, but not everyone is happy to see him back. The book is just so well written and the story so well executed with Tudor bringing her characters, her setting and her story all to life. As with its predecessor, Tudor's use of language allows her to create a genuinely unsettling thriller that spans across two time periods, revealing how the hidden secrets of childhood resurface and impact on the current day. It made the reading of each timeline easier to follow, and was very interesting to observe how he has changed outside of the book. I'd not managed to read The Chalk Man but was grateful and excited to receive an advanced reading copy from the publishers.
