Where: We will convene at the AmericInn in Silver City (located on the shores of Lake Superior, just 7 miles east of Lake of the Clouds Overlook, Porcupine Mountains). Unfortunately for us there was a pretty thick cloud bank on the horizon above Lake of the Clouds where the sun would be rising. The second was last fall when it poured the whole time while staying in the Lake Superior Cabin at the Mouth of the Big Carp River. The trail takes you by remnants of the abandoned Union Mine, an abandoned copper mine. The flames were as hypnotizing as the views all around us.
Take some time to appreciate the ancient volcanic escarpment that borders the lake, the vast carpet of virgin timber, and the dramatic view of Lake of the Clouds in its many moods. The Escarpment Trail is one of the best hikes in the Porcupine Mountains. Then, on your way back down south, you can make a detour to go to Mackinac Island (ferry required) or Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Visitors of the Porcupine Mountains should plan on stopping by the park's Wilderness Visitor Center near the junction of South Boundary and Highway M-107. It shouldn't be surprising that Lake of the Clouds was our first stop after arriving at Michigan's largest state park. I think the wind from the car must have blown it over. You can find the spring on the park's north side, easily accessible from the Union Mine Interpretive Trail. There are 90 miles of hiking trails in the park as well as many opportunities for camping. Explore 4, 316 miles of trails. The sites have fire pits, picnic tables, and water and electric hookups. The spring maintains a steady temperature of 32 degrees all year round.
