Obviously one of the driving factors of this story is the mystery behind who is Aces? Faridah is either a writing genius or an alien from another planet because her skills are out of this world! So much suspense from the get-go! And she's only just finished college when this was published! Especially when they don't have acknowledge knowledge about a particular experience. That only means everyone must work together to dismantle and rebuild institutions that perpetuate systemic racism so that they no longer disadvantage some people in order to elevate others. Ace of Spades has plenty of promise, but this debut title fails to deliver. So I really wish it was explored more. The book emphasized the problem I have when the plot is racism vs racism being one of many factors. I just need you to know that this is hands down required reading for all those looking for a good book.
My high school was made up of mostly Black students, with a minority of white students. Ace of Spades is by far the best one. This review is for: everyone. I felt like the ending wrapped things up much too quickly and I wanted to know more about how all of that took place. By the time readers get to the big reveals, the ultimate purpose of the book becomes shocking. Apart from main characters all the other characters were perfectly crafted as a piece of puzzls that's fits perfectly in the story and give audience a perfect outcome. The writing was great! This probably will not be a popular opinion, but sometimes simpler solutions to mysteries are more effective. The book is addictive and as a fan of horror films, I was often legitimately scared for both Devon and Chi when it was revealed that Niveus Private Academy has a specific agenda for the two Black students they deign to admit every decade.
What impressed me with this book as well is that in the midst of all of this there were some very funny, lighthearted, and heartwarming moments. Honestly I can't tell you guys how excited I am to read this beauty. It was this experience, an abundance of spare time, and an unexpected binge of Gossip Girl on Netflix that inspired her stunning debut novel, Ace of Spades. The only two black students. It is in how quickly society will condemn Black people as guilty and how it lingers in the media's silence and wrapped narratives. Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé is an absolute artist of crafting tension and suspense.
He lives in a tough neighborhood and runs drugs to help out with money. Chiamaka is the logic and drive to Devon's heart creating a perfect balance between our protagonists, I didn't prefer one perspective over the other, they were both so interesting. No jobs, no money; sell drugs, get money. Nothing really felt American to me and she was too vague on the setting because she didn't want to tie it down to any one place. And it affects people who are white and working class, and also who are Black and working class. I loved how unashamed Chiamaka was. I think that as a reader it would have been easy to assume that the two would get along and effectively work together to figure out who was revealing all of the information about their personal lives; however, I liked that the author didn't make it that easy.
Knowing that Aces threatened all of this and more, putting both their personal lives and academic futures on the line, I was completely invested in the outcome of events (and that Chiamaka and Devon would get their happy ending). I did like the epilogue, but I still had a lot more questions than we were given answers to. WHAT IN THE HOLY FUCKERY DID I JUST READ???!!!!! Instead, he focuses on developing his musical skills. And often felt anti-Black in it's portrayal of the teens.
Headmaster Ward was an under-used character. First published June 1, 2021. We are gonna take some time and consider the epilogue - seriously that was my fav part of the book. Chiamaka, who is very wealthy, is a straight-A student, Head Prefect, and well on her way to Yale. This was one of the latter. Bluish green with fish swimming and bright sea plants. This ties in with the social media observation—how did Chiamaka never look her up before? And i feel like reading the story really almost proved that to me. I recognize the other three standing up there, though I've never spoken to them. Once I got started, I couldn't stop turning the pages. In normal assemblies, we usually just pledge allegiance to the flag, but seeing as this is the first assembly of the year, Niveus does what it does best: amps up the drama. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. So this tells the story of the only two black students (Devon Richards and Chiamaka Adebayo) who are in their final year of high school in Niveus Academy. Okay so I had really high expectations for this book, considering all the hype and positive feedback from numerous readers, but alarmingly this book disappointed me:/ I found myself reading the same sentence over and over again because I was extremely bored (if you plan on reading this book before going to bed then trust me when I say this, you should not!

Àbíké-Íyímídé wastes no time jumping into the brunt of the mystery, creating a tremendous amount of suspense only a few pages in. The way it takes on white supremacy and institutionalized racism still baffles me till now. Word spreads around their school and this is not a good start to their final year with college applications at the risk! • The plot behind Aces. Definitely a character which will live with me for a long time. The characters never once engaged in academics, nor did academics ever play a role in the plot.
