As strong as the main characters are, the secondary cast does not lose out, and there is a strength and diversity to them that only deepens and strengthens the rest of the worldbuilding and Whitesides does an excellent job of giving them all individual voices and motivations. Yet for all the complexities of the plot and the ruses and schemes of Ardor Benn, the story never loses its focus or its core, and Whitesides does an admirable job of bringing that together with action and adventure and making it easily understandable without losing that breadth and depth. Vanity, love, and tragedy are all candidly explored as the unfulfilled desires of the dead are echoed in the lives of modern-day immigrants. Firstly, this book caught my attention because it was tagged as "Perfect for fans of The Lies of Locke Lamora, Eli Monpress and Theft of Swords. " I would've much preferred if feelings were hinted at in this book and then further explored in the next one.

The only thing between the world and utter chaos is Ard and his ragtag group of associates. I'm fine with real-world alcohol used in fantasy books unless, of course, it's something that can only exist if it comes from a certain real-world country. Real, flying, and fire-breathing dragons! It was really cool to see the process of how Grit, this worlds' 'magic', is created through dragon fire. Nonetheless, the book is easy to read, and I noticed the narrative improving as it progressed. Alex Velesky is about to discover that the hard way. This is a novel that is all about the ride. I was so heavily invested in all of them that certain deaths just got me so emotional! I laughed my way through this book.

While there are a few clever moments in this book that I appreciated, most of it I could guess at and figure out before the characters did. I'm always down for a good fantasy heist book. The first half of the book focuses on the heist. Ardor Benn is ACTUALLY FUNNY. There is something called compound grit that can be mixed with other kinds of grit and it will make its effect last longer but be weaker. And the apple of my eye. So there be this stuff called Grit. I have known Tyler since we did a joint school visit after the first Janitors book came out.
