But I think there definitely could be more stories and more films out there about women, and about young women, and about teenage girls that feel authentic and real and imaginative, like an alternative role model for young women. I actually started a female film collective in New York called Film Fatale about a year ago. As it stands, the film is really only focused on one relationship, and we see it falling apart in painful if not altogether surprising fashion. Being here in Edinburgh I know that if I go and see a film in the cinema, there will already have been a certain level of curation, I'l be watching a good film. Combining a young entrepreneur called Õie and a serial failure called Tõnu, this film is exploring the competitive nature of high-tech silicon valley, and the successes and failures that happen there. But another thought occurred to me, what if the unicorn and dragon are just simple meant to represent her and Sterling's relationship, and her putting an end to it? Because of what happened before this, I thought she meant she was the unicorn being lured by Sterling's charm and trapped by their terribly unhealthy relationship. I think far too often in films it just cuts to black right away and doesn't really cover it emotionally. Davina (Natalia Dyer) is a dreamy teenager who fantasies about escaping her depressing life at home where she is the sole caretaker for her wheelchair bound mom. They slowed down the crickets to the point where it sounded like they were singing an aria.
It comes back, and I think people now are hungry for that time when everyone wasn't always on their iPhones and everything wasn't so clean and digital, with a bombardment of advertisements. There's a certain nostalgia and fantasy at play to our memories of what it was like growing up. We shot the film in stages, and the principal photography was all of the live action, and we even shot those sequences as much in chronological order as possible, so that as these characters are falling love, and the production was equally in love with them, and going on this journey.
