Sometimes, being around all of that makes me feel like my insides are collapsing, cracking and breaking. Overall this book really affected me in ways i didn't know a book could and i will be reflecting on it for a long time. Without spoiling the end, I'll only say that I like how all the problems Chiamaka and Devon identified throughout the course of the novel did not simply vanish. Publication: June 1st 2021. Head girl Chiamaka isn't afraid to get what she wants, but soon everyone will know the price she has paid for power. The initial set up, minus the romance, reminded me of Avril Lavigne's Sk8ber Boi. My body tingles when I see the dark oak door with a plate engraved Music Room, and the sadness melts away. Ace of Spades, the upcoming debut novel of Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé, has piqued many readers' interest with its early comparisons to Gossip Girl and Get Out. The characters solve the mystery easily halfway through the book, leaving the rest of the pages mostly for them to muse about what they will do about their knowledge. I climb the steps to the first floor, where my music classroom is, burning the depressing memory and tossing its ashes out of my skull. So watching Get Out was really transformative for me. I went through a time of avoiding the Young Adult genre. With heart-pounding suspense and relevant social commentary comes a high-octane thriller from debut author Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé. The result of these characteristics is something otherworldly. I'm never getting over this book and honestly, I'm not complaining.
Chiamaka is a wonderfully complex and flawed character–she just sounds like she ought to be in grad school instead of in high school. Did you read Ace of Spades or do you want to? The book is addictive and as a fan of horror films, I was often legitimately scared for both Devon and Chi when it was revealed that Niveus Private Academy has a specific agenda for the two Black students they deign to admit every decade. He swivels expectantly as one stiffly suited teacher rushes forward and hands him a cream-colored envelope. I was originally going to make this review a spoiler free review, but i don't think i can hold it all in.
I'm more into the composition and songwriting aspect of music anyway, but it still feels good to have an actual instrument in front of me again. The ending was extremely unsatisfying. And she's only just finished college when this was published! My high school was made up of mostly Black students, with a minority of white students. If at times it seems sensational, that's only because you've allowed yourself to forget it's all real. The story picks up immediately and doesn't let up until the last sentence of the book, all while slowly ratcheting up the tension. Entirely selfish I know, but I would have loved it if Faridah would have expanded more on the ending and its time jumping epilogue, if only so I could have spent more time with the in-depth characters she created. Similarly, I felt as though I was waiting for Chi to catch onto what I had realized from the start. Some are sending money to their parents as well as working.
