If a yoke that bottoms out is pulled back out an inch, is the driveshaft too long? Drive shaft broke while driving. Got really lucky that the bolts didn't break off in the hole or mees up the threads. Transmission shop took a look and confirmed the shaft is bad. Out of gear, the output shaft may be turning with the drive shaft. Here is a picture of that mis shaped spring thing that came right out before I pulled it out. Look at the splines inside the yokes. Although it was in the trans very tight, a few taps with a hammer brought it out.
4-bolt owners don't have it so nice. The hub nut is usually a laminated nut, any "blue ring in that I guess would be pre applied threadlock, it not coming apart easily is sort of the point. The vehicle may not be able to be driven to a repair location without damaging transmission tail shaft. Can't get driveshaft back in chrome. Maybe they will see the problem, and get me back on the road! I didn't do anything to the transmission except put a new seal in. I know I will need to refill the transmission fluid since it all spilled out on the hghway, I just don't know what I need to do in order to get it back in correctly.

I knew it wasn't going to be able to get it apart. Then two mechanics removed it and tried to reinstall. I don't understand your first sentence. That was no big deal with a four-foot prybar. In reply to EeeByGum: I put a jubilee clip around it but it was still oozing grease while I was fitting the hub. Got my converter today (well yesterday now) so I decided to tackle the install.
With the spline not sliding in, trying to put it in after letting some spray paint dry on it, might produce some indicating scuff marks that'd help to show why not. On edit, I went out and looked at both the chassis and the sub frame and I said four bolts and it is actually six bolts and they run down through tubes so alignment is pretty much guaranteed even if they are loose.
