The Bible reveals a scriptural way for us to meet and to serve, and we thank the Lord that in the church life we can practice this way. And the Body is built up, but it is built up in love! I want to live like that. How did we get from halfway there to all the way there? It's about stepping up when there is a need. But the teaching ministry, rightly done under the authority and sufficiency of the Bible, is a gift of Jesus to the church.
This local church, yes. The Gospel isn't information, it's the Good News that Christ died for you! He handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor-teacher to train Christ's followers in skilled servant work, working within Christ's body, the church, until we're all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God's Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ. The spiritual growth of other members is your task. John Stott is right, when he wrote, "The New Testament envisages not a single pastor with a docile flock but both a plural oversight and an every-member ministry. " We could even use "gift".
