A conflicted experience, I think. This is anengaging and heartwarming read with interesting characters. But the unsealable wound is the disappearance 30 years ago of her only child.

This may be cliche, but words are not enough to express the way I feel about this novel and especially its surprise, unexpected, delightful sometimes narrator Marcellus, the giant…. A story of loss of a family member and finding a new one. There were some moments that I felt connected with her that I wasn't expecting. Rating: Narration: 4. You would think nothing but in 'Remarkably Bright Creatures' by Shelby Van Peet, the two an inextricably intertwined. In a sense, Marcellus is writing to the void, simply hoping that someone will hear him. This novel explores different characters who are faced with major choices: They can open themselves up to something new and take an unexpected, daring opportunity or they can continue on as they have been. Anyone who wants to believe that all of the thoughts and actions ascribed to Marcellus are in the minds of Tova and Cameron – in the same way that we all believe we know what our pets are thinking when we most likely don't – the story still works – and works well. Most of it probably won't be, but I've plucked some gems from this sort of exercise! Now years later, Cameron is adrift, always fired from every job with no high school diploma. Of course, this can quickly become heavy-handed, but when you're training yourself to see the world through a certain character's lens, I find being overly metaphoric is a great way to get into their head, even if I need to trim it back later. What he can't do is escape from captivity in a small public aquarium in the fictional town of Sowell Bay, near Puget Sound.

I don't want to go into any greater detail, but I will tell you that all the characters and the story will tug at your heart, but at the same time make you smile.
I love the story of animals leading humans to redemption, of mercy and joy found in unexpected places. I loved seeing Tova's interactions with Marcellus, and how just that little bit of understanding that passes between them enables her to open up to life once more. This is an utterly charming book. When the women meet drooling over a boardwalk storefront that none of them can afford on her own, a plan is hatched to divide the space in three, and a friendship—and business partnership—is born. It takes you on a journey about family, loss, love and friendship. If being able to see and experience the wonders of our planet and its remarkable creatures up close helps nudge folks in the direction of caring for our planet and its future, then I can't help but feel like the captivity of Marcellus, and others like him, is not in vain. "A debut novel about a woman who befriends an octopus is a charming, warmhearted read. " The role of the octopus plays is vital but that is when you have to suspend belief a little. And in early drafting, it was tempting to make the connection between Tova and Cameron the twist.
Despite the unorthodox relationship at its core, the debut novel offers a wholly original meditation on grief and the bonds that keep us afloat. " Others over the years have included The Girls by Lori Lansens, We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler, Moloka'i by Alan Brennert, State of Wonder by Ann Patchett, Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin, and Whirligig by Paul Fleischman. But that's also the beauty of this story as we witnessed a true character growth! She is retired and doesn't need the money, but she does the nightly cleaning job at the aquarium to fill time, time which seems empty these days. I thought, what if the source of tension here is that it's painfully obvious, early on, to readers…but not to the characters themselves?
