Firstly, I have to say that I loved Tova. His chapters are a delight. I loved seeing Tova's interactions with Marcellus, and how just that little bit of understanding that passes between them enables her to open up to life once more. This book was such an exceptional experience for me. That book was full of heart, bittersweet, a mix of mystery this was a story of friendship, love, loss, and connection. Housed in the aquarium is a giant Pacific Octopus called Marcellus. His mom abandoned him when he was nine years old, leaving him with her aunt Jean. They cannot even manage to comprehend predictable meteorological events. In Shelby Van Pelt's debut novel, Remarkably Bright Creatures, we fall into pages in the journal of Marcellus, a gloriously empathetic octopus. But we live here, too. It is also fierce, holding on when so much has slipped away. This story has helped me recognise and connect with many plots and themes especially loss and grief, disconnection and anger towards people. But the way the author chose to frame the story was both artificial and distancing. The story touches on friendship, love, loss and the threads that bind us.

But, in Tova's telling, there is never the sense of bitterness or self-pity. This may be cliche, but words are not enough to express the way I feel about this novel and especially its surprise, unexpected, delightful sometimes narrator Marcellus, the giant…. In fact, when I first finished reading the book, I had rated it as a 4-star read. Is it possible for a somebody to build a bond with another that isn't a person? She has an ally in Marcellus who it turns out may be able to help her resolve one of the mysteries of her life.

Tova doesn't really need to work, but she like to keep busy and she prefers to share her time with those who don't ask a lot of questions. It is about a young man who has lost his way, his mother has abandoned him and he gets a clue about who his father may have been and sets out to find him. We had such a strong character in Tova, such a strong, resilient women. The inexplicable bond between Marcellus and Tova is the stuff of reading magic.
