It's a simple life with hard-working folk who know or care little about what is happening in the outside world. To expect anyone to fully push through one book, let alone five, that are considered subpar just because they're in the middle of such an epic is a little unfair, especially when there's no guarantee that the reader will actually enjoy the grand finale and the denouement. As for the ending itself, I loved it. Indeed, when the series started, that was precisely what it was. Still, The Eye of the World was a great start for the series, with Robert Jordan using Tolkein influences to lay the groundwork, from which he would truly forge the Wheel of Time 's identity with The Great Hunt. The weakest chapters of this book were once again the Perrin and Elayne chapters. However, these moments were not enough to redeem the book for me. I think what saves the Wheel of Time from being killed by its slog is that the slog itself isn't the horrific standstill mess that so many people try to paint it as. Well, it's scratching the tiniest mark on the surface of The Wheel of Time. Admittedly, very little happens in Rand's parts of the book, yet what does happen is monumental. The Middlesex County public swimming pool is now the only Tarberry Bog in the Commonwealth. She decides to put her old life behind her and become an Aes Sedai. There are those among the Forsaken who will go to any length to see him dead--and the Black Ajah is at his side.... Unbeknownst to Rand, Perrin has made his own truce with the Seanchan. He's also good at creating weaves of Fire. He even gets another drinking scene with Birgitte, so that was an instant plus for me. It wasn't your usual Rand-vs-Forsaken climactic battle, but I think the entire scene was really well-written, and I think it was very impressive and in-character for Egwene to take this risk herself rather than leave it to someone far less experienced albeit somewhat less important.
It will undoubtedly be challenging to capture the sheer size of the novels. But hey, that's just my taste; clearly others love that! For starters, I actually like Perrin's chapters here. It's mostly boring setup and it ends just as it's starting to get good. For some, this could mean a nightly ritual of reading a book and snuggling with your children before bed. A children's playground is located beyond a fence near the settlement. I will say that his chapters suffer a little from lack of information and a rather improbable succession of timing that brings Bashere, Loial, and Logain all together at one time. However, my favourite character dynamic in this book, and one I was not at all expecting, was the emerging friendship between Mat and Birgitte. We spend a lot of time in Perrin's head during "The Slog" and through these books, there is a sense of some backpedaling with his characterization. Now, not all fans think the slog is a slog, and there will certainly be ideas drawn from it. The novel begins with Rand finally being told by Moiraine, Suian and Verin that he is the Dragon Reborn, something he is understandably unwilling to accept. So that's a total of 15 books to draw from.
However, he left copious notes for Brandon Sanderson, who was handpicked by Jordan's wife, Harriet, to complete the series. The second time I teared up was when reading how Logain obtained his prophesied glory. Apparently, Egwene was one of the characters who Robert Jordan had extensive notes on and that really shows in the best of ways. It is a deal made with the Dark One, in his eyes, but he will do whatever is needed to rescue his wife, Faile, and destroy the Shaido who captured her. A lot of what I've seen while looking into the slog is that many seem to agree that their rereading now is nowhere near so painful now that they don't have to wait.
This leads to the moment where Tuon completes the marriage ceremony, a moment that had me laughing harder than any other joke in the series. In the tradition of The Lord of the Rings, this first book follows the party as they travel across the country, witnessing the bigger world for the first time and the horrors that go with it. It has Eastern influences! One bit of praise I did give to that book, though, was that Perrin's storyline picked up at the end. Matt is the rogue of the group. Books like Terry Brooks' The Shannara series or the novels of David Eddings stuck loyally to this blueprint, keeping fantasy alive, if not really pushing the genre forward. And how does it affect the series as a whole if several books are widely agreed to be subpar? Of all the fantasy novels I have read, many of them have a Lord of the Rings archetype to the point that some have appeared as little more than rip offs. Also, Lord of Chaos has what is probably my least favourite moment of the entire series, which is Egwene stumbling into a dream of Gawyn saving her from Rand and suddenly deciding she loves him out of nowhere.
But the plot is still relevant. In fact, most aren't. As for criticisms, I would say that, at the time, it was difficult not to get frustrated at Rand for not finding Selene suspicious when she was so obviously Lanfear. It feels like some attempt to generate conflict or tension when it already has opportunity to be tense on its own. But I couldn't shake the feeling that life was meaningless, so I kept working harder, until I collapsed in crying spells which came regularly, like clockwork.
He tried to employ the common tropes in a way that would satisfy the publishers whilst also questioning and probing them in initially subtle and, ultimately, big ways (the subverting of gender roles being the most obvious). Later on in the series, I came to view Fain as little more than a caricature but he is honestly terrifying in The Great Hunt. Most heroic of all is Lan's battle with Demandred, which had me cheering when he killed the Foresaken, left sad when it looked like he died, only for me to go back to cheering when he arose victorious, presenting Demandred's head. I like a good plot as well though, but I prefer one that focuses on fewer characters in order to move forward with them more quickly. Despite these issues, Lord of Chaos still has plenty of brilliant moments, with its compelling Rand chapters and one of the best endings to any book in the series. It did all (mostly) come together eventually (with Sanderson's help), but again I feel like the important parts could have been told without spending so many pages in other places. Honestly, before this point, I had actually been enjoying the books of the so-called slog. The Prophecies of the Dragon detail how the Dragon will be reborn and how his return will affect the Light and the Shadow. The things he gets into with women in this book!
