The Briggs in the book was appalling and repellent, withholding and insensitive, entirely about his own survival and self-interests, and everything Mary B. Cutty accuses him to be.

Now to find the movie. Nothing was learned, nothing changed. Finally, this novel left me pondering why it should be that tragedy and loss can bring out the worst in some, but the best in others.
But if it's crazy, it's largely admirably and bravely so, a fittingly strange movie about the sheer madness of life on the frontier. It was just so out of character. It is not too hard to guess, either, that the two characters will take on some of each other's attributes: that Briggs will discover some of Cuddy's sense of duty and that she, in turn, will learn from his earthy pragmatism. If it is a story of Briggs and redemption, it is unsatisfying since he is ultimately little changed. And those who lose their minds may very well be the only realists in the story. Neither of them fit into "normal" society. Swank brings a gravitas to her character that is undermined when some of her antics are played for laughs. The West, as seen in "The Homesman, " is an unforgiving place, with flashes of stark and nightmarish beauty.
A few years ago, another director, Kelly Reichardt, tried her hand at a wagon-train Western full of strong women facing daunting challenges. The fact that they can be grief-stricken one moment and dancing a wild jig the next is what makes this film – probably the best Western since Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven – so inscrutable, so distinctive and, finally, so moving. Great story until the last 50 pages or so. What are the real trade-offs when the trappings of civilization are exchanged for the freedom of a frontier, if that freedom can only be had through hardscrabble toil and tribulation?
