Badass Pacifist: Doss, a conscientious objector who ends up saving 75 of his comrades during one of the most ferocious battles of the Pacific War as a combat medic. It is shown quite plainly that he does love his sons and wife, but his experiences in the horror that was the Great War and his subsequent alcoholism have turned him into the person he is. While it does show that even she found it creepy and unsettling and was ultimately quick to dismiss it, his actions do show how differently they treated things like this back in the 1940s. The film depicts Doss' actions in Okinawa as if it was his first time in combat and his first chance to prove himself to his fellow soldiers. Hacksaw Ridge is the second movie based on a true story in a row for me, after my last review of Deepwater Horizon. Not only a great war film, but also a very profound, compelling and captivating story that turns into something even greater when I realize that it actually happened and that Doss actually is a national hero. Ironically and unsurprisingly skewing more toward the War is Hell mantra (made famous as the memoir title of another unlikely WWII underdog hero, Audie Murphy) than, say, one that proselytizes Peace is Heaven, this film's title says everything about its tone: Hacksaw Ridge. After his second day at Hacksaw Ridge when he is med-evac'ed, Doss' trip down on a gurney is shot as though he was ascending into heaven. There's something you gotta see. Although Desmond was threatened with a court martial by an officer because he refused to touch a weapon, he was never actually court martialed as depicted in the film. Everyone is at their top, portraying characters based on real heroes seems to inspire them in a way that makes the actors motivate themselves to inspire us, the audience.
BFG: Smitty Ryker wields a M1918A2 BAR with lethal effect, mowing down dozens of Japanese soldiers. Sergeant Howell's reaction twice to Doss using a M1 rifle to make a makeshift stretcher and to Doss using a double-loop knot (which Howell had mocked during training) to lower him from the top of the ridge. The camera does not look away from any of this.
